The park threw a retirement party for the 28-year old mule on September 25, offering well-wishers carrot cake and a chance to say goodbye to a favorite ambassador to the community. Frances, who has "wintered" at Mount Vernon for the last 11 years, will spend her newfound free time at another Presidential home, the Jimmy Carter National Historical Site in Plains, Ga. http://www.nps.gov/jica/. Former President Carter personally requested a mule for his boyhood farm because he has fond memories of riding and working with mules as a youngster. Welcome to Georgia, Frances! ************************************************************************ NPS completes Civil War database The service records of 6.3 million veterans who fought in the Civil War are now available online through the National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors (CWSS) System. Users can search for individual soldiers and their assigned regiments and subsequent battle engagements and link to related Civil War websites. Partners in creating the database include the Mormon Church, the Federation of Genealogical Societies, Howard University, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Civil War Preservation Trust, and the African American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation. Information from the database will also be incorporated into an online map to be produced through a new partnership with National Geographic. http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/ ************************************************************************ Calls for papers Symposium: New research into the History of National and International Exhibitions, Festivals and World`s Fairs, Victoria & Albert Museum, London - March 4, 2005.
