Pratt Cassity and James Reap presented on the history of the organization and emphasized the need for networking among commissioners. Foremost on the meeting agenda was the presentation of a full slate of members nominated to serve as the 2004-2005 Board of Directors: Monica Callahan, Chair (Madison); Regina Brewer, Vice-Chair (Atlanta); Mark Petermann, Secretary (Tifton); Evelyn Reece, Treasurer (Athens-Clarke Co.); Joel Adams (Cartersville); Michael Commisso (Valdosta); Dianne Davidson (West Point); Anne Floyd (Augusta); Ken Kocher (Monticello); Michael Page (Rome); James Reap (Decatur); Laura Short (Douglasville); Lee Webb (Savannah); Michael Whipple (Macon); and Sybil Willingham (Taylor County). Composed of fifteen members, one from each of nine districts (a combination of Regional Development Center boundaries) and six at large from within the state, the board members and Officers must be current or past members of preservation commissions or serving as staff to a preservation commission. Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church and Cemetery, Cty Rd. 125, Quitman vicinity, Brooks County, was listed November 22. ************************************************************************ State Stewardship Awards deadline extended to December 15 This award program recognizes outstanding leadership and achievement in historic preservation stewardship of state-owned or administered properties. Criteria for accepting nominations: Nominees must be current state employee(s) who have made significant contributions to the identification, evaluation and preservation of historic properties either owned or otherwise administered by the state or affected by state projects. The nominees' contributions may be local, regional or statewide in scope. Significant contributions may include, but are not limited to: rehabilitation of historic buildings, survey and research, preservation plans, maintenance and upkeep of historic properties, publicity and outreach programs, education and interpretive displays, publications, etc. The focus of the awards is to honor the achievements of state employee(s) in furthering the preservation of Georgia's historic properties. The deadline for applications has been extended to December 15, 2004. The purpose of the fund is to assist small town preservation and revitalization initiatives around the country, with a focus on towns with populations of 5,000 or less. Grants will range from $5,000 to $10,000. The Fund will operate within the framework of the Preservation Services Fund grants with the same application form, eligibility requirements, matching requirements, and deadlines. http://www.nationaltrust.org/help/grants.html. The conference theme is Sustain America: Vision, Economics, and Preservation. Deadline is January 14, 2005. More information is online at https://www.nthpconference.org/ The US/ICOMOS 8th International Symposium will be in Charleston, South Carolina, May 5-8, 2005, cosponsored by US/ICOMOS and the Historic Charleston Foundation. The theme is Heritage Interpretation: Expressing Heritage Sites Values to Foster Conservation, Promote Community Development and Educate the Public. Abstracts are due January 2, 2005. ************************************************************************ Internships and fellowships The Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record/Historic American Landscapes Survey (HABS/HAER/HALS), a division of the National Park Service, seeks applications from qualified individuals (architects, historians, landscape architects, engineers - students and professionals) for summer employment documenting historic structures and sites of architectural, landscape, and technological significance throughout the country. Duties involve on-site fieldwork, preparation of historical reports or measured and interpretive drawings for the HABS/HAER/HALS Collection in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Projects last approximately twelve weeks, beginning in May/June. Salaries range from $5,400 to approximately $9,200 for the summer, depending on job responsibility, project locality, and level of experience. Applications Due: February 14, 2005 (postmark date).
