A group of amateur historians and underwater archaeologists from the North Georgia Underwater Archaeology Society have recently been documenting the piers and will be working in the river on Saturday, November 6. The divers, who will be mapping the underwater remains, will be joined on-shore by civil engineering students and professors from Southern Polytechnic State University. The mapping exercise will give the students "hands-on" surveying experience while they learn about historic building and engineering techniques. If you would like to come out and experience history this Saturday, meet under the Highway 41 overpass on Old River Road between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. The divers will be on-site beginning at 9:00 am if you want to come out early. For more information on the work in the Etowah River, contact Bob O'Daniels with the North Georgia Underwater Archaeology Society (NGUAS) at 770-891-3529 or check out their Web site at www.nguas.org. A new window exhibit at the Rome Area History Museum highlights this summer's underwater archaeological survey conducted at the confluence of Rome's three rivers. The survey was conducted by members of M.A.R.C., Marine Archaeological Research & Conservation, a Florida-based volunteer dive group, and coordinated by Jason Burns, underwater archaeologist for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division. Burns will speak about the survey at the Rome Area History Museum on November 9 at 7:00 pm. A viewing of a 32-minute video of the survey, including underwater footage of the Dixie Steamboat site, will follow the talk. This event is open to the public free of charge. Originally installed in 1889, the statue was removed for the first and only time in mid July in order to undergo thorough restoration. Also known as the Goddess of Liberty, Miss Freedom stands 22 feet high and weighed approximately 800 pounds at her removal. The hollow copper statue returns weighing 1,400 pounds due to replacement of the internal armature to increase its stability as it rests on the Capitol's dome. Also, Miss Freedom's exterior finish has been repaired and restored to a white painted appearance. The statue will again be airlifted for reinstallation. Preparations will begin at approximately 9:00 a.m., and the actual airlift is anticipated to take place between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m., weather permitting. Rain date is Sunday, November 7. The work on Miss Freedom is part of the overall restoration of the Georgia State Capitol Building carried out by the Georgia Building Authority and the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission. The contractors working on this project include Winter Construction Co., the architectural firm of Lord, Aeck & Sargent, and the restoration firm of Heather & Little, Ltd. Additionally, Superior Rigging, Sunbelt, and Builder's Steel have all contributed to the completion of the Miss Freedom project. ************************************************************************ State Capitol ornaments available The Georgia Capitol Museum introduces the first limited edition in a series of collectible holiday ornaments.
