The bill was passed by the Motor Vehicles Committee, but was not passed by the house rules committee. HR 1322, the constitutional amendment that the bill was dependent upon, did not make it out of the senate. SB 407 would have established a special license plate to benefit historic preservation funding. The intent of this legislation is to use the net proceeds of the sale of these license plates to fund historic preservation projects in the state through the Historic Preservation Division's Georgia Heritage Grant program. Visit the general assembly's Web site at http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2003_04/ for more information. HPD especially thanks Darren Harper for his initiative in proposing this project to legislators. HPD would like to thank Senators Eric Johnson, Brian Kemp, Randy Hall and Ginger Collins for sponsoring the bill and Representatives Alan Powell and Bobby Parnham for their work and assistance. Many thanks to everyone who indicated their interest in ordering a license plate and/or who contacted their legislators to urge their support of the bill. Now is the time to ask your senators and representatives to support the bill in the 2005 session! Look for license plate news on our Web site at www.gashpo.org and in upcoming issues of this newsletter. Visit GaPA's (Georgians for Preservation Action) Web page at http://www.georgiatrust.org/get_involved/advocate.htm for advocacy news and information. ************************************************************************ 2004 Georgia Historical Society Awards Publication Awards: Steve Oney for his book, "And the Dead Shall Rise: The Murder of Mary Phagan and the Lynching of Leo Frank," Hon. The United States Army Corps of Engineers in conjunction with the Clement Group and TIC have been restoring the waterfront surrounding Fort Jackson in a $3 million restoration project. The project has been going on since September and will be completed by June 2004. www.chsgeorgia.org ************************************************************************ Public Sector - Funding Through the National Park Service The Save America's Treasures public partners are now accepting applications for the FY 2004 Save America's Treasures grant round to preserve nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts, and historic structures and sites. They are currently looking for stories to be included in the show. Specifically, they are looking for houses that have become islands in the midst of high rises, strip malls, and sprawl.
