The Centennial Farm Awards program honors significant farms that have been continuously operating for over 100 years and deserve recognition for their historical importance. Georgia Agriculture Commissioner, Tommy Irvin, presented awards to 17 historic farms. Carter, Georgia's most famous farmer, called farming a "time-honored and treasured experience." He received a plaque in recognition of his own farm that has been in his family for seven generations since 1833. "The life of a farmer is very special," he said. The innovative program, initiated to preserve the nation's historic lighthouses, was one of 15 Honor Award winners. The NHLPA, adopted in 2000 as an amendment to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, allows ownership of surplus lighthouses to be transferred at no cost to eligible entities. Last year, in a pilot program lead by the U.S. Coast Guard, the General Services Administration, and the National Park Service, the law smoothed the transfer of five historic lighthouses including the one at Tybee Island to the Tybee Historical Society, Inc. Among the co-nominees were the Georgia Historic Preservation Division (HPD) and Tybee Historical Society, Inc. HPD director Ray Luce and Tybee Historical Society, Inc. executive director Cullen Chambers accepted the awards in Denver. For more information, visit www.nationaltrust.org. ************************************************************************ GHS SEEKS PARTNERSHIPS WITH GEORGIA SCHOOL DISTRICTS The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) has partnered with the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools in a second Teaching American History Grant. In this second three-year project, the Savannah-Chatham Schools was awarded nearly $1 million for a program entitled, "Overcoming Historical Illiteracy: Building the Foundation." This project, predicated on history and reading education through biographies of great Americans for teachers at the K-3 grade levels, will be facilitated with the help of the Georgia Historical Society, which will implement scholarly lectures and a site-based summer travel program in Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington. The Georgia Historical Society is interested in partnerships with school districts all over Georgia in their attempts to compete successfully for the Teaching American History grant.
