The theme, Preserve Our Landmark Places, celebrates our diverse history and how historic preservation helps save that heritage. Events will take place in communities across Georgia. Check the Preservation Calendar on our Web site at www.gashpo.org under What's New for a complete list of events near you! ************************************************************************ NATIONAL REGISTER NEWS The National Register Review Board will meet in Atlanta on May 9, 2003. Sea View Apartments, at 7 18th St., Tybee Island, Chatham County, were listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 22, 2003. ************************************************************************ NCSHPO RECEIVES NPS AWARD The National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers (NCSHPO) received the National Park Service's new annual Director's Heritage Partnership Award on April 17, 2003. The award recognizes individuals or organizations that partner with the NPS to advance the highest standards of excellence in historic preservation and cultural resources management. The NPS and the SHPOs have worked together the last 37 years. The SHPOs are many peoples' first point of contact for federal and state historic preservation programs to help preserve historic and prehistoric properties. During that time, the partnership has leveraged $20 billion in private investments to rehabilitate historic buildings and to revitalize older downtowns and conserve historic neighborhoods. ************************************************************************ MAY IS (ALSO) ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH The theme for this year's observance is Archaeology of Colonial Georgia-Discover the 13th Colony! The Society for Georgia Archaeology serves as the primary sponsor of Georgia Archaeology Month. Co-sponsors include state agencies, private firms, and non-profit and professional organizations. An exciting development for this year is the production of a video (rather than usual poster) and accompanying lesson plan that highlights the recent archaeological investigation of the circa 1780s Grange Plantation Sitealso believed to be the site of Mary Musgrove's 1730s trading post-located on Georgia Ports Authority property in Chatham County. The site was discovered and excavated by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. in Athens, Georgia, as part of permitting requirements for the construction of a deep-water container berth by Georgia Ports Authority. These materials will be distributed to middle schools, regional libraries, state parks and historic sites, and museums across the state as part of Georgia Archaeology Month 2003. A variety of educational programs and events will be offered during Archaeology Month. These include tours, lectures, demonstrations, investigations, and exhibits. For more information about Archaeology Month 2003 and Georgia Archaeology, visit the Society for Georgia Archaeology Web site: www.georgia-archaeology.org/sga . ************************************************************************ 2003 GEORGIA TRUST AWARDS The Georgia Trust recognized preservation accomplishments around the state during its annual meeting March 29 in Milledgeville. Awards for excellence in rehabilitation or restoration were given to 22 projects, including two county courthouses, a former roundhouse, a library and two coastal lighthouse keepers' cottages. University of Georgia professor John C. Waters received the Trust's highest award for his longtime leadership in preservation issues and education. Awards were also handed out for preservation service and for stewardship. In addition to recognizing four projects for excellence in restoration, 18 projects for excellence in rehabilitation, two entities for preservation service and one for stewardship.
