His new duties will encompass all of the southeastern states, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. During the 21 years Richard has worked for HPD, he made substantial contributions in environmental review. Since the Office of the State Archaeologist was moved into HPD in 1997, his role grew to include policy and planning development. We will all miss Richard and his great sense of humor, and wish him all the best in his new federal agency role. HPD's management and information unit manager and deputy SHPO Carole Griffith will be retiring at the end of 2002 after 32 years of service. Many of the programs that have made Georgia's state historic preservation office a national leader, have been due to Carole's leadership and vision. Our CLG program was launched under Carole's direction and initiative. She also served as the National Register program coordinator in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Over the years, Carole has worked closely with the National Register Review Board, the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network (GAAHPN), Georgians for Preservation Action (GAPA) and many projects with The Georgia Trust including heritage education. Carole has overseen conferences and workshops, HPD's grants programs and all of the financial paperwork that keeps things running smoothly. She has always tried to look at "the big picture" and helped HPD to reach many of our goals. Thank you Carole for all your hard work you will be missed! A formal job announcement for filling Carole's position will be released soon. Responsibilities include: managing a staff of eight full and part-time staff, serving as a member of HPD's senior management team, overseeing HPD's management of federal and state funds and the office's operating budget. Preservation services within the unit include HPD's information and education program, photographic services, statewide advocacy and coordination with The Georgia Trust. Qualifications include a master's degree and three years experience. Anyone interested in knowing more about the job or how to apply should contact HPD Division Director Ray Luce at Historic Preservation Division, Ga DNR, 156 Trinity Avenue SW, Atlanta, GA 30303; 404651-5061 or ray_luce@dnr.state.ga.us. ************************************************************************ NATIONAL REGISTER NEWS The following nominations were recommended by the National Register Review Board at their September 27 meeting in Monticello: Athens Manufacturing Company, Clarke County; North Tallapoosa Residential Historic District, Haralson County; Blair-Rutland Building, DeKalb County; Berkeley Park Historic District, Fulton County; Inman Park-Moreland Historic District Amendment, Fulton County; Thornton Plantation, Harris County; Jefferson Historic District, Jackson County; Eddie Bowens Farm, Liberty County; Sam Ripley Farm, Liberty County; and The Elms, Talbot County. ************************************************************************ GEORGIA'S HISTORIC COURTHOUSES & CITY HALLS STUDY Many of Georgia's historic courthouses and city halls symbols of the state's communities need financial assistance for repairs if they are to continue serving their constituents. A recent study prepared by the Office of Jack Pyburn, Inc., Historic Preservation Architects in Atlanta estimated that $466,000,000 was needed to put all of the state's historic courthouses and city halls in sound physical condition. Without additional sources of funding that support the efforts of counties and cities to preserve the historic integrity of these buildings and to provide modern systems that meet 21st century needs, Georgia is in danger of losing irreplaceable resources that often anchor their downtowns. The executive summary of the study is available on HPD's Web site at www.gashpo.org under publications. The press release is available under what's new. ************************************************************************ LOCAL FOCUS: CRAWFORD W.
