HAPPY LABOR DAY! ************************************************************************ HPF APPROPRIATIONS FOR FFY 2003 Now is the critical time to "sign on" to the effort to increase funding for the Historic Preservation Fund that supports the programs and services of HPD and provides sub-grants for CLGs. The Senate proposes cutting the current HPF amount; the House has recommended an increase. If the Senate proposal stands, Georgia's share of the HPF could be significantly reduced. Final action on the SFY 2003 appropriations is likely to occur in early September when Congress reconvenes after the August recess. To show your support for this initiative, go to Preservation Action's Web site at www.preservationaction.org and sign on to the letter that will be delivered to the House and Senate conferees. Glen Bennett at The Georgia Trust is coordinating Preservation Action's effort here in Georgia. Let him know when you sign on or contact him at 404-881-9980 for further details. ************************************************************************ NATIONAL REGISTER NEWS Southern Dairies, 593 Glen Iris Dr., Atlanta, Fulton County, was listed in the National Register on August 21, 2002. Archaeologists with The LAMAR Institute will be searching for evidence of an 18th century house site and lost graves at New Ebenezer, Georgia. Persecuted Protestant refugees from the Alps of Salzburg settled the town in 1736. The public is invited to visit the dig site, watch excavations in progress, and speak with archaeologists. Groups of more than 10 people should make tour arrangements with the New Ebenezer Retreat Center 912-754-9242. The dig will begin during the Labor Day Festivities of The Georgia Salzburger Society on September 1. The public is invited to visit September 1-3 and 6-13. Hours when the dig is open to the public are 9 AM to 3 PM, except Sundays when hours are from 1 PM to 4 PM. The excavation will be on the grounds of the Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church at New Ebenezer. The church is located near the intersection of Georgia Highway 275 and the Savannah River in Effingham County. Visit the LAMAR Institute's Web site at http://shapiro.anthro.uga.edu/Lamar/ for more information. ************************************************************************ HISTORIC HOTELS OF AMERICA PROGRAM NEWS The National Trust's Historic Hotels of America program has come up with an idea to help currently operating or vacant historic hotels in dire need of rehabilitation assistance, cash infusions, or sweat equity by listing their names in the 2003 Historic Hotels of America membership directory. Each October, 150,000 copies are printed and distributed to travelers at 185 HHA member hotels nationwide and at major travel agencies. The goal is for interested parties to read the appeals and contact a property to offer assistance. Contact Thierry Roch at thierry_roch@nthp.org with a brief description of the type of assistance needed by September 12, 2002. Visit their Web site at www.nthp.org/historic_hotels/index.asp. ************************************************************************ MUSEUM DOCENT NEEDED The Margaret Mitchell House and Museum is looking for a full-time Museum Docent to give tours of the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, a two-block historic site located in Midtown Atlanta.
