GPR reporter Emilie Kopp attended this year's state preservation conference in Macon and interviewed The Georgia Trust's President and CEO, Greg Paxton, as part of her research. The series focus is heritage tourism, with particular attention paid to the Juliette Gordon Low house in Savannah; the Woodrow Wilson House in Augusta; and the Governor's Mansion in Milledgeville. Each year, the National Trust honors 12 communities from across the country that offer enjoyable natural, historic, aesthetic, recreational and cultural experiences. Each has a dynamic downtown, commitment to historic preservation, interesting architecture, cultural diversity, an economic base of locally owned businesses, and walking access for residents and visitors. This year's Dozen Distinctive Destinations will be announced during summer tourist season. The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 19, 2002, COB. This one-day gathering of historic rehab professionals will cover timely, cutting-edge topics such as the current market for historic rehabilitation, the investment market for tax credit equity and state of the art deal structuring issues. The HPDC is a leadership organization for real estate developers and professionals engaged in tax-advantaged historic rehabilitation development. The HPDC has been established as an affiliate of the National Housing & Rehabilitation Association, in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the nation's foremost advocate for historic rehabilitation. Eligible candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in public history, museum or American studies, historic preservation, history or a related field. The application deadline is April 30, 2002. ***************************************************************************** NEH CHALLENGE GRANTS The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has announced a new challenge grant initiative for small institutions interested in improving their humanities resources in local history. These grants can be used to develop long-term programming or for cultural/ heritage tourism. The initiative's goals are: to build opportunities for research, education, and public programs in local history, especially in communities underserved by humanities activities; to establish long-term partnerships among educational and cultural organizations in a community; to help organizations in strategic planning; and to build a base of financial support for long-term programming.
