Appointments for new members of the Review Board were made: Rudolph Byrd, Emory University, Atlanta, history/American studies; John Hand, architect, Thomasville, architecture; Kaye Minchew, Troup County Archives, LaGrange, at large; Brian Thomas, TRC Garrow Associates, Atlanta, archaeology; Judy Wood, Corps of Engineers, Savannah, archaeology. During the meeting, Review Board members and staff provided technical assistance and encouragement for the preservation of the Sally Davis House and Andalusia. Alston House, Atlanta, DeKalb Co.; Lakewood Heights Historic District, Atlanta, Fulton Co.; Spotswood Hall, Atlanta, Fulton Co.; VirginiaHighlands Historic District, Atlanta, Fulton Co.; Dublin Commercial Historic District, Laurens Co.; Sunset Hill Cemetery, Valdosta, Lowndes Co.; Valdosta Commercial Historic District Amendment, Lowndes Co.; Alfred and Jane Ables House, Buena Vista, Marion Co.; and Hillman-Brown-Bowden House, McDuffie Co. ***************************************************************************** NR REVIEW BOARD MEMBER RECEIVES HCC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD The Historic Chattahoochee Commission (HCC) announced its 2001 Achievement Awards on October 4 at their annual meeting. National Register (NR) Review Board member, Kaye Minchew, was recognized for her outstanding efforts to preserve, interpret and disseminate the history of Troup County. Kaye, the only Georgian to receive an HCC award this year, has served as director of the Troup County Archives since 1985. Congratulations Kaye! ***************************************************************************** HISTORIC STRUCTURES SURVEYS UPDATE The following citywide survey projects were completed and accepted by HPD: Kennesaw, Cobb County (79 properties); St. Marys, Camden County (130 properties); Lavonia, Franklin County (194 properties); Roswell, Fulton County (533 properties); and Greensboro, Greene County (521 properties). ***************************************************************************** VERNACULAR GEORGIA CALL FOR STATE CONFERENCE PAPERS Vernacular GeorgiA is soliciting proposals for presentation at the 2002 Georgia State Historic Preservation Conference, "Georgia Communities at the Crossroads: Growth Strategies and Solutions," to be held in Macon February 28th March 1, 2002. The VGA Paper Session will be held between 2:00-4:30 on Thursday, February 28th. Papers may address any aspect of vernacular architecture in Georgia or elsewhere, although topics dealing with the conference theme, "smart growth", are especially encouraged. Papers should be twenty minutes in length and should be primarily analytical rather than descriptive in content. Deadline: postmarked by November 19, 2001. Presenters must deliver their papers in person and be VGA members at the time of the session. Each year, through a national competition, the Academy awards fellowships in the fine arts and pre- and post-doctoral fellowships in the humanities, including architecture, historic preservation and landscape architecture.
