Drummond, Ph.D. of Georgia Institute of Technology. America's heritage belongs to everyone from all walks of life. Preservation Week is the time to show how your community values the diversity that makes it unique. Contestants are encouraged to submit creative and original Preservation Week posters with lively and evocative images that express America's layered heritage and diversity, and how historic preservation helps save that heritage. Posters must embody the theme for the whole nation, but can have a local angle. Creativity is encouraged! Submissions must be postmarked no later than Friday, January 4, 2002. Please visit the National Trust Web site at www.nthp.org/preservationweek/2002_contest.asp for more information. ***************************************************************************** NPS BATTLEFIELD PRESERVATION GRANTS AVAILABLE The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) of the National Park Service (NPS) in Washington, DC, has opened its 2002 grants competition. The ABPP awards grants for preservation projects that lead to the permanent protection of endangered battlefield lands. Projects that involve multiple stakeholders are most likely to be successful. Nonprofit organizations, local, state, and federal agencies, tribes, colleges and universities may apply. Matching funds are not required, although matching funds and in-kind donations are encouraged. The average award amount is $22,700, although the ABPP has awarded grants of up to $117,000. The application deadline is January 11, 2002. Books published during 2000 and 2001 are eligible for consideration. Established in 1982, the Abbott Lowell Cummings Award is presented annually to the publication deemed by a jury of VAF members to have made the most significant contribution to the study of the vernacular architecture and cultural landscapes of North America.
