Anyone wishing to do so should contact HB 118's sponsor Rep. Jeannette Jamieson. House Ways and Means subcommittee meetings to begin discussion on HB 118 are expected to be scheduled soon. The deadline is March 1. For additional information, contact Cherie Blizzard at 404/651-5181. ******************************************************************************************* NATIONAL REGISTER NEWS At their January 26 meeting, the Georgia National Register Review Board recommended the following properties for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places: Porterdale Historic District, Newton County; Sandersville Commercial Historic District, Washington County; Winterville Historic District, Clarke County; Alapaha Colored School, Berrien County; Bank of Surrency, Appling County; Wildwood Circle-Hillcrest Historic District, Muscogee County; Peacock Woods-Dimon Circle Historic District, Muscogee County; Wynnton Village Historic District, Muscogee County; Montezuma Historic District, Macon County; Eastman Bus Station, Dodge County; Newton House, Clarke County; Phillips-Turner-Kelly House, Jasper County; Riegel Hospital, Chatooga County; Royal Theater, Troup County; and the Warrenton Gymnasium, Warren County. The nomination for the Gatrell House, Wilkes County, was tabled until the next review board meeting on May 8, 2001. Look out for the National Register listed Effingham County Courthouse in the new suspense film, "The Gift." This movie was filmed on location in Springfield, Savannah, and at the historic Bonaventure Cemetery in Thunderbolt. ******************************************************************************************** GAAHPN NEWSLETTER The premiere issue of Reflections, the quarterly newsletter of the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network (GAAHPN), is now available. Please contact Jeanne Cyriaque, African American Programs Coordinator, at 404/ 6564768 or jeanne_cyriaque@mail.dnr.state.ga.us for a print copy. ******************************************************************************************** CENTENNIAL FARMS APPLICATION AVAILABLE ONLINE The Georgia Centennial Farm Program was created to draw attention to historic farms and encourage their preservation. Nominees must have been "working farms" for at least 100 years. They must also have a minimum of 10 acres actively involved in agricultural production or must generate at least $1,000 in annual income. In addition, farms must be owned by members of the same family for at least 100 years or be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Qualifying Centennial Farms are honored each October at a special award ceremony at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Georgia. To date, the program has recognized over 200 farms around the state. Nominations are due March 1, 2001. Applications are available at www.gashpo.org under Publications or by calling Gretchen Kinnard at 404/651-6782. ******************************************************************************************** GEORGIA TRUST SCHOLARSHIPS Each year, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation offers two $1,000 scholarships to students majoring in historic preservation or related fields including archaeology, architecture, history, urban planning, and landscape architecture. The deadline is February 28, 2001. ******************************************************************************************* NIMROD LONG TO SPEAK AT UGA The School of Environmental Design at the University of Georgia will host a lecture by noted landscape architect Nimrod Long entitled "Thirteen Secrets on How to Compete Effectively" at 3:30 pm on Thursday, January 31, 2001 in the Law School Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public. Nimrod Long is the president of Nimrod Long and Associates, a landscape architecture firm he established in Birmingham, Alabama. Some of his projects include streetscape improvements to historic areas, site planning and park design, and a neighborhood trail network funded by an ISTEA grant.
