Region I- Calhoun (Northwest) BARTOW COUNTY On December 8th, Sgt. Mike Barr received a late call from a concerned citizen on West Oak Grove Road. Two people had been seen in a red Toyota truck shooting a deer in a small field from a public road. The two quickly loaded the deer and left. The citizen had a good description of the truck and poachers. Sgt. Barr went to the field and collected blood evidence of the deer. He contacted RFC Byron Young and they decided to be at the field again at daylight as there had been a very large buck seen in the area. Just at daylight, a red Toyota truck with the same description came up the road and quickly pulled into a woods road into the property. Ranger Young and Barr waited for a while and then went to the truck. In the bed of the truck was a head removed of a spike buck. The tag came back to a known poacher. RFC Young went back to his truck to get needed equipment and was seen by the poacher. The poacher quickly tried to get back to his truck to leave the area. Sgt. Barr detained the subject who admitted he had shot a deer in the field yesterday, but stated he had done so while hunting from the ground. The poacher was charged with hunting deer without fluorescent orange and advised that he may be charged with hunting without permission. The case is still under investigation. He also located a large PVC pile, embedded in the ground, possibly used for bear bait. One of the persons stated he had trail camera pictures of a bear. While noting a ladder stand near the bait, Sgt. Barr recognized it as a stand possibly stolen from another property next to where the "baiting" hunter normally hunted off Calico Valley Road in Pine Log. He contacted the owner of the stand who came to identify the stand. The stand had a serial number from the manufacturer. One of the hunters admitted to taking the stand.
