U.S. Department of Education Introduces Green Ribbon Schools 2011 International Year of Forests Now until Saturday, Dec 31, 2011 International Year of Youth Now until Thursday, Aug 11, 2011 Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup Now until Tuesday, May 31, 2011 The U.S. Department of Education's new Green Ribbon Schools program will recognize schools that are creating healthy and sustainable learning environments and teaching environmental literacy. The program marks the first time the federal government has launched a comprehensive green schools initiative. Schools will be able to apply later this year. Compost Awareness Week Now until Saturday, May 7, 2011 Drinking Water Week Now until Saturday, May 7, 2011 Green Building Curriculum: Pilot Schools Needed GEF is now accepting applications for schools and classes interested in piloting its Green Building Program curriculum. The School as a Teaching Tool curriculum is available for K-8 classrooms in grade-level sets (pilot dates ongoing by level) and the Green Building Course Elective is available for high school classrooms (pilot date beginning in September 2011). Postage Stamps Promote Simple Ways to Go Green In celebration of Earth Day 2011, the U.S. Postal Service, in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, issued the Go Green commemorative stamps. Use the stamps to promote awareness of simple actions to help conserve natural resources. Also consider using the stamp collection or video as part of an EE lesson plan.
