Environmental Education in Georgia May 13, 2009 Save the Date for the 2009 Georgia Outdoor Classroom Symposium Georgia's 13th annual Outdoor Classroom Symposium will be held on Friday, October 30, 2009 at Chase Street Elementary School in Athens, GA. This year's theme of "Growing Fertile Minds" will feature sessions on how to create specific types of school gardens, how to start farm-to-school programs, and how to use your school grounds to enchance cross-curricular learning. NCLI Coalition Celebrates Historic Legislation Introduced on Earth Day Senate and House versions of the historic No Child Left Inside (NCLI) Act were introduced on Earth Day 2009. The bi-partisan legislation, if passed, would mark the first environmental education legislation to pass Congress in more than 25 years. Funds would support outdoor learning activities both at school and in non-formal environmental education centers, teacher professional development, and the creation of state environmental literacy plans. ASCD Article Addresses Education & Environmental Literacy In an article from Educational Leadership (May 2009) published by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), author Mike Weilbacher describes obstacles to developing students' environmental literacy and describes several innovative models for increasing environmental literacy. New Report on Environmental Research and Education Needs The National Council for Science and the Environment has released a new report, Environmental Research and Education Needs: An Agenda for a New Administration. It identifies research needed to improve scientific knowledge, and education needed to improve public understanding, professional capacity, and a strong workforce. Study Finds Environmental Education Programs Lead to Cleaner Air A first of its kind study funded by EPA shows that environmental education programs are an effective tool in helping to improve air quality. Improvement was due to actions taken by students, including doing servicelearning projects and fostering community partnerships. Atlanta Edible Schoolyards Featured in Creative Loafing Magazine Schools thoughout Atlanta are incorporating school gardens into the curriculum. These edible classrooms help schools teach standards in a way that is fun for the students and gives them the experience with fruits and vegetables that can start lifelong healthy eating habits. A school garden program can include the whole process from building the garden, to planting, to harvest, to prepartion, and finally to table. 2009 Georgia Youth Environmental Symposium Winners Nine Georgia schools showcased their environmental projects and took home prizes at the annual Youth Environmental Symposium.
