Fleming Secures $500,000 Community Development Block Grant for the City of Harlem
Atlanta- Representative Barry Fleming (R-Harlem) recently announced that the City of Harlem has been awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) as part of the Department of Community Affairs 2006 Annual Competition.
CDBG is a grant program designed to help communities in need of funding for activities such as housing improvement projects, public water and sewer facilities, local health and head start centers, as well as economic development projects. All eligible projects under the program must pose a substantial benefit to persons of low or moderate income in the community.
The newly acquired funds have been earmarked for the construction of a new head start and family connection center. The new facility will be equipped with classrooms, offices and a kitchen, all of which are heavily needed in Harlem. Additionally, the center will host after school programs for children in the area.
"Starting kids off on the right foot is the best way to make sure they contribute to society rather than end up being a drain on society. These head start funds will be used to help the more vulnerable children in our community get a better start in life," Representative Fleming remarked.
