Birdsong Recognized for Unrelenting Support of Georgia's National Guard

Prestigious Award and State Flag Presented

Atlanta Representative Ken Birdsong (D-Gordon) received the National Guard Association of the United State's, (NGAUS) Patrick Henry Award during a ceremony held at the State Capitol in Atlanta on September 19th at 11:15 am. The award was presented by Georgia's Adjutant General David Poythress and is given to local and civic leaders who distinguish themselves with outstanding service to the armed forces.

In presenting the award, Major General Poythress noted that Rep. Birdsong has been an ardent supporter of the National Guard in the General Assembly. He has sponsored dozens of bills over the years benefitting those in service or who have retired and takes a great deal of time visiting stationed Guardsman, listening to their concerns and giving them moral support.
The Georgia National Guard's 3rd Infantry Division also presented Rep. Birdsong with a State Flag that was taken in Iraq and flown. Birdsong gave the division three Georgia flags before they were shipped to Kuwait and later, to combat in Iraq.

"Once again, I have been given more credit than I deserve. The ones who should get the recognition are the men and women who are serving our country," said a teary-eyed Birdsong. "They deserve the credit for protecting our freedom and we should always show our gratitude. This has been one of my greatest honors."

Rep. Birdsong, a lawmaker since 1976, is Chairman of the Defense and Veterans Affairs Committee and serves on the Rules and Transportation committees.
