Effective August 1, 2003 driver license service was terminated by the DMVS because of budget shortfalls. This service was limited to a mobile DMVS unit coming into the county once a month and allowing people to apply in person, which is required with some permits. "Although many services are available online, a large majority of my constituents are farmers and factory workers and spend their work day in the fields and plants and they do not own a computer, therefore, the online service does not do them any good," said Rep. Smith. "People needing handicap permits must now travel many miles just to get to a DMVS location." "This has forced some to drive over 75 miles just to get a license. Charlton County has taxpaying citizens, just as all other counties throughout the state, and they deserve to have these much needed services provided. I do not believe it is to much to ask the DMVS to come to our small rural county once a month," said Smith. The DMVS can be reached at 678-413-8400 or by writing to the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicle Safety, 2206 East View Parkway, P.O. Box 80447, Conyers, GA 30013 # # # For further information contact Representative Smith at 404-656-5103.
