3-1780-4837 For Immediate Release: Georgia House of Representatives Public Information Office Room 131, State Capitol 30334 404-656-5082 1-800-282-5800 March 28, 2003 SHERIFF'S BUSINESS ACTIVITIES CURTAILED Snow Bill Seeks To End Private Profits The House recently passed a measure authored by Rep. Mike Snow, DChickamauga, which would strictly limit for profit activities by sheriffs. Specifically, the bill prohibits local sheriffs from operating bonding companies, wrecker towing businesses, and private security or investigation firms. "We are trying to keep sheriffs from making side money on the job," Snow said. "Not all sheriffs do this, but some do and I think that we need to limit their entrepreneurial activities while they are on the public payroll." With only a minor amendment, House Bill 415 passed the House and is now being studied by the Senate. The legislation also strictly limits spouses and sheriffs' unemancipated children from engaging in the same sort of businesses. -30- For further information please contact Rep. Snow at (404) 656-6801.
