Georgia House of Representatives Public Information Office Room 131, State Capitol 30334 404-656-5082 1-800-282-5800 1-1754-4811 For Immediate Release: MURPHY NAMED TO FOUR HOUSE PANELS January 31, 2003 Atlanta-- State Rep. Quincy Murphy, D-Augusta, has been appointed to the Higher Education, Transportation, and Insurance Committees. He has also been named Secretary to the House Intra-governmental Coordination Committee, one of only a few freshmen legislators in Georgia history to be named to such a post of leadership. Murphy was named to the posts by House Speaker Terry Coleman, D-Eastman. The committee system enables lawmakers to break legislation down by subject area in order to review and study proposed changes to state law. Legislatures rely heavily on the committee system to develop a knowledgeable and focused review of proposed legislation. Each year literally thousands of bills and resolutions are introduced in the House and Senate. No single legislator could possibly read all of the measures which are drafted. By assigning legislation to committees with a specific area of expertise bills and resolutions are assured of a fair hearing. "Rep. Murphy has already shown a willingness to work hard," said Speaker Coleman. "His work ethic, his expertise in the insurance industry, and his relationship with the many quality institutions of higher learning located in his district will make him a valuable member to these committees, and to the House in general." "I am blessed and honored to have been entrusted with these responsibilities," said Rep. Murphy. "It is my intention to use this opportunity to work, learn, and to serve the citizens of Augusta Richmond County and institutions of the 97th district as we move forward." -30- For further information contact Rep.
