Report for Thursday, January 31, 2008 The ninth day of the 2008 legislative session was called to order by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle. Senator Don Balfour of the 9th stated that the journal had been read and was found to be correct. Senate Bills 386-390, Senate Resolutions 781, 786 and 788 and House Bills 130, 358, 578, 875, 995, 998, 1002 and 1003 were read for the first time and assigned to committees. The clerk then read the reports of standing committees and second readers. Lt. Gov. Cagle congratulated Sen. Mitch Seabaugh of the 28th on the birth of his granddaughter. Following the morning roll call, Sen. Cecil Staton of the 18th led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. He then introduced the Chaplain of the Day, Pastor Johnny Ellison of Green Acres Baptist Church in Warner Robins, who led the Senate in the daily devotional. Sen. Dan Moody of the 56th took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to recognize students and teachers from Haynes Bridge Middle School seated in the Senate Gallery. Sen. Valencia Seay of the 34th took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to remind the Senate that tomorrow is the American Heart Association's National Wear Red Day. Sen. Seabaugh took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to formally announce the birth of his granddaughter, Rebecca Loraine McRae. Sen. David Adelman of the 42nd took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to remind the Senate of the Green Democracy Lunch today, hosted by Focus the Nation. Vincent Fort of the 39th took the well to announce that the Georgia Black Contractors' Association will be holding events at the Capitol today. SR 756 and 783-787 were then read and adopted. Sergeant-at-Arms Lorenzo Wallace escorted Sen. Emanuel Jones of the 10th and his guests, members of the National Baptist Convention of America and the southern district of NeighborWorks America, to the rostrum. The clerk read SR 756, which commends both organizations for their work in preventing mortgage foreclosures. Sen. Jones took the rostrum to speak to the resolution. Sen. Ross Tolleson of the 20th took the rostrum to introduce the Doctor of the Day, Dr. Virgle W. McEver of Bonaire. The clerk read SR 764, which commends the work of the Building Owners and Managers Association-Atlanta (BOMA-Atlanta) and recognizes today as BOMA Day at the Capitol. Sen. John Wiles of the 37th took the rostrum to introduce the president and past president of BOMA, and to recognize members seated in the gallery. The clerk read SR 761, which recognizes the Georgia Peach Festival as a nationally recognized symbol for the state of Georgia. Sen. Tolleson took the rostrum to speak to the resolution and to introduce the 2007 Georgia Peach Queens. Sen. Renee Unterman of the 45th took the well to recognize student nurses visiting the Capitol today, along with Linda Easterly, president of the Georgia Nurses Association. Sen. Nan Orrock of the 36th took the well to remind the Senate that today there is a lunch for the Working Families Caucus that will feature a presentation from the Georgia Budget and Policy Institution on tax reform.
