Report for Wednesday, January 24, 2007 The seventh day of the 2007 legislative session was called to order by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle. Senator Don Balfour of the 9th stated that the journal had been read and was found to be correct. Senate Bills 40-43 and Senate Resolutions 5, 66, 68 and 71 were then read for the first time and assigned to committees. The clerk of the Secretary then read the reports of standing committees and second readers. Following the morning roll call, Lt. Gov. Cagle recognized Sen. Ralph Hudgens of the 47th, who led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. He then introduced the Chaplain of the Day, Reverend James Aikens of First Baptist Church in Winterville, who led the Senate in the daily devotional. There were no unanimous consents. Sen. John Douglas of the 17th took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to recognize and commend Georgia troops who are in active duty in Iraq and other locations around the world. Sen. Douglas also discussed some of the recent media coverage of the war in Iraq. Sergeant-at-Arms Lorenzo Wallace and Sen. George Hooks of the 14th escorted the staff of the Fiscal Office of the Georgia General Assembly to the rostrum. Sen. Hooks and President Pro Tempore Eric Johnson of the 1st took the opportunity to commend the Fiscal Office maintenance staff for all of their hard work. The clerk of the Secretary then read SR 74, which commends the staff of the Fiscal Office. The resolution was subsequently adopted. SR 67, 69, 70, 72 and 73 were read and adopted. Cecil Staton of the 18th escorted members of the Northside High School Eagles football team to the rostrum, along with Head Coach Conrad Nix. The clerk of the Secretary then read SR 61, which commends the Northside High School Eagles football team. The resolution was subsequently adopted. Senators Staton, Ross Tolleson of the 20th and Robert Brown of the 26th took the rostrum to commend the football team and Head Coach Nix for winning the Class AAAA State Football Championship in 2006. Following the announcements, Majority Leader Tommie Williams of the 19th moved that the Senate stand in recess until the dissolution of the joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives for the purpose of hearing the State of the Judiciary, and then stand adjourned until 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 25. # # # # From the Upper Chamber Wednesday, January 24, 2007 Page 2 of 2
