Report for Thursday, January 11, 2007 The fourth day of the 2007 legislative session was called to order by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle. Senator Don Thomas of the 54th stated that the journal had been read and was found to be correct. Senate Bills 9 and 22-24, and Senate Resolutions 4 and 30 were then read for the first time and assigned to committees. Following the morning roll call, Lt. Gov. Cagle recognized Sen. Valencia Seay of the 34th, who led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance. She then introduced the Chaplain of the Day, Reverend Rhys Stenner of New Hope Baptist Church in Fayetteville, who led the Senate in the daily devotional. Lt. Gov. Cagle then recognized Sen. Horacena Tate of the 38th, who introduced the Doctor of the Day, Dr. Benedict Benigho of Atlanta. There were no unanimous consents. Majority Leader Tommie Williams of the 19th took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to talk about GeorgiaSpeaks.com, which is a new website that will allow Georgia citizens the opportunity to present their ideas to their state Senators for new legislation. Sen. Seth Harp of the 29th took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to discuss legislation regarding a local referendum for the sale of beer and wine on Sunday. Sen. Ross Tolleson of the 20th took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to speak about a proposed grant program to establish alternative fuel pumps across the state. Greg Goggans of the 7th took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to invite Senators to a meeting on the issue of the Certificate of Need (CON) on Tuesday, January 16, at the Carl Sanders Education Center. Sen. Eric Johnson of the 1st took the well to remind Senate members that several Georgia troops were deployed today for Iraq, and to keep those Georgians who are overseas in their thoughts. Sen. John Wiles of the 37th took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to invite Senate members to a breakfast for the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) on Tuesday, January 22. Sen. Cecil Staton of the 18th took the well on a Point of Personal Privilege to speak about the final report issued by the Joint Comprehensive State Trauma Services Study Committee. Sen. Staton encouraged Senators to support the establishment of a state trauma care system. SR 32 was read and adopted. Sen. Preston Smith of the 52nd took the well to speak to the resolution, recognizing students from the Leadership Rome program. SR 27-29 and 31-33 were read and adopted. Sen. Jack Hill of the 4th took the well for a quick announcement on next week's Appropriations hearings.
