Total employment held steady at 9,400. There were 400 positions added in 2016 and no job change in 2015. The sector has not shown negative job growth since 2012. After being down for five consecutive years, Construction employment has now grown for five straight years. There were 7,400 jobs added in 2017 and 10,100, 9,700, 10,900, and 4,400 jobs gained from 2016 to 2013, respectively. Job losses from 2008 to 2012 were, respectively, -17,100, -38,300, -16,100, -3,800, and -4,400. Of the 7,400 Construction jobs added this year, 1,800 were in Construction of Buildings, Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction also added 1,800, and Specialty Trade Contractors grew by 3,800. portion of the sector added 3,100 jobs in 2017 after adding 2,400 jobs in 2016. Retail Trade positions were up 3,500 in 2017 after growing by 9,000 in 2016. The Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities industry added 7,100 jobs in 2017 after adding 9,100 workers in 2016. The Information sector grew by 4,200 jobs in 2017 after payrolls were up 500 and 3,700 in 2016 and 2015, respectively. The sector has now added workers for six straight years. The Information sector includes the motion picture, publishing, sound recording, telecommunications, and data processing industries. The Financial Activities sector grew by 3,500 in 2017 after growing by 4,200 in 2016 and 2,700 in 2015. In 2017, the Finance and Insurance industry added 1,800 workers, while the Real Estate, Rental and Leasing industry also grew by 1,800. Professional and Business Services saw employment increase by 14,700 in 2017 after growing by 20,800 in 2016. The sector is broken into three industries: Professional and Technical Services where 7,100 jobs were added in 2017; Management of Companies and Enterprises which held steady on positions in 2017; and Administrative and Support Services where employment was up by 7,600 over the year. After growing by 19,600 in 2016, the Education and Health Services sector added 10,700 jobs in 2017 as both the education segment and the health services portion of the sector experienced growth. The Educational Services industry grew by 2,500 while the Health Care and Social Assistance industry grew by 8,200 over the year. Over the last 10 years, Educational and Health Services has grown by an average of 10,700 jobs per year. Georgia's Manufacturing sector grew by 8,400 jobs in 2017. Payrolls were up 10,000 in 2016 and 11,100 in 2015. After being down for five straight years, Manufacturing payrolls in the state have grown for seven straight years. Durable Goods Manufacturing accounted for 4,700 of the added jobs in 2017 and has now grown for seven consecutive years while NonDurable Goods Manufacturing grew by 3,700 and has added workers over the year for only the fifth time since 1998. All Employee Average Hourly Earnings in the Manufacturing sector decreased $0.80 over the year as earnings dropped from $25.05 in 2016 to $24.25 in 2017. Average Weekly Hours were up as the workweek increased from 40.6 hours in 2016 to 41.0 hours in 2017. Average Weekly Earnings in Manufacturing decreased from $1,017.03 in 2016 to $994.25 in 2017. Production Worker Average Hourly Earnings increased $0.28 in the Manufacturing sector from $18.14 in 2016 to $18.42 in 2017. Average Weekly Hours were down from 43.1 hours in 2016 to 43.0 hours in 2017 while Average Weekly Earnings moved up from $781.83 in 2016 to $792.06 in 2017. Trade, Transportation and Utilities employment grew by 13,700 in 2016 after growing by 20,500, 28,100, and 27,000, in 2016, 2015, and 2014, respectively. The Wholesale Trade Payrolls in Georgia's Leisure and Hospitality sector were up 11,700 in 2017 after growing by 18,200, in 2016 and 20,000 in 2015. Since growing for 16 consecutive years from 1992-2007, then contracting from 2008-2010, the Leisure and Hospitality sector has now added jobs for seven straight years (2011-2017). The Arts and Entertainment portion of the sector added 1,400 jobs in 2017 after growing by 2,800 in 2016 while the Accommodation and Food Services portion of the sector added 10,300 payroll employees in 2017 and 15,400 in 2016. Employment in Other Services increased by 2,000 in 2017 after being up 1,600 in 2016 and up 1,900 in 2015. The 2,000 new jobs in 2017 were a result of Repair and Maintenance growing by 700 workers; Personal and Laundry Services employment rising by 1,400; and Religious, Civic, and Similar Organizations shedding 200 jobs. After falling for six consecutive years (2009-2014) and shedding 32,800 jobs, the number of Government jobs in Georgia rose for the third year in a row. In 2017, employment was up 4,400 after growing by 3,600 in 2016. Federal Government payrolls grew by 500 in 2017 after growing by 1,600 in 2016. After eight straight years of cuts, State Government jobs grew by 1,800 in 2017. Local Government payrolls were up 2,100 in 2017 after adding 4,100 jobs in 2016. Employment increased by 900 in 2016 and was flat in 2015. With job gains in 2016 and 2017, the MSA has added jobs in two straight years for the first time in a decade. Job growth was up for the fifth consecutive year in the Private Service-Providing sector, which added 800 workers in 2017. Retail Trade saw employment grow 300 over the year, the third straight year of gains. Government employment was up 100 in 2017 after being down 200 in 2016. The Athens MSA gained jobs for the seventh year in a row in 2017, with a gain of 2,900 jobs over the year. The average employment in the MSA was 96,800 in 2017. The biggest driver of growth this year was the Private Service-Providing industries, including a sixth straight year of growth for Trade, Transportation, and Utilities where 400 jobs were added, as well as a seventh year of job gains for Leisure and Hospitality with an increase of 200 jobs in 2017. This is now the seventh consecutive year of job growth in the MSA. Average employment in the area was at 2,723,700 in 2017. Trade, Transportation and Utilities, Professional and Business Services, Education and Health Services, Leisure and Hospitality, and Construction were the main drivers of job growth over the year. Trade, Transportation and Utilities employment grew by 11,800 in 2017, the most out of all industries.
