January 2008 Data January 2008 Employment Situation Georgia payrolls lost 53,300 jobs in January. This -1.3 percent drop in jobs over the month are widespread as several sectors in the economy experienced losses. Those areas enduring significant declines this month include Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Professional and Business Services, Leisure and Hospitality, and Government. Over the year, Georgias economy has created 42,200 jobs. Goods producing jobs are down 14,700, or -2.2 percent, while service positions have grown by 1.7 percent, up 56,900 workers. Gains over the year were realized in Trade, Transportation and Utilities, Educational and Health Services, Government, Professional and Business Services, and Leisure and Hospitality. Losses over the last twelve months were hardest felt in Manufacturing, Financial Activities, and Construction. Over the month losses were most severe in the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities sector as it declined by 22,000 jobs in January. Retail Trade, experiencing job losses as a result of the holiday season coming to a close, accounted for 16,400 of the 22,000 positions dropped. Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities employment was down 4,700 over month but has grown by 4,600 over the year. Wholesale Trade jobs are down 900 over the month and up 2,100 over the year. The Financial Activities sector took a hit in January as it lost 1,300 payroll positions during the month. The sector has now lost 3,400 workers since January of 2007. The over the month loss comes as Finance and Insurance positions are down 200 and Real Estate, Rental and Leasing positions were down 1,100. Georgias Professional and Business Services sector lost 8,000 workers in January. The loss is attributable to Administrative Support positions dropping by 7,700, Management of Companies jobs declining by 900 workers and Professional and Technical Services adding 600 payroll employees. The unemployment rate in Georgia changed from 4.6 percent in December to 5.2 percent in January.
