Thurmond, Commissioner An Equal OpportunityEmployer/Programs Auxiliary Aids and Services Available Upon Request to Individuals With Disabilities Georgia Department of Labor Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators / June 2001 1 Introduction Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators, Monthly Report, is designed to provide in a single publication data on a number of indicators used to measure movement of the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area's economy. The indicators have been collected and disseminated for many years by private and governmental agencies, but not under a single cover. Contributing agencies include Georgia's Department of Labor, the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, F.W. Dodge, McGraw-Hill Information Group, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, Cobb Community Transit System, Smith Travel Research and HSH Associates, Financial Publishers. All data in this report are seasonally adjusted except Average 30-Year, Average 15-Year Fixed Mortgage Rates, and Average One-Year Adjustable Mortgage Rate on Page 15, and those contained in the Metropolitan Atlanta Consumer Price Index chart on page 3. Data are presented in graphic and tabular form. Each series shows movement over a 24-month period. Where appropriate, companion graphs and tables show data that have been deflated by the U.S. Consumer Price Index or the U.S. Construction Price Index. The purpose is to adjust for inflation and show growth in constant dollars. The purpose of this publication is to serve the business and professional communities, economic developers, economists, educators and others who have need for information on Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area economic trends. Workforce Information and Analysis welcomes comments, suggestions or questions concerning Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators. For the 12-month period ending in April, the CPI-U for Atlanta increased 3.9 percent. Over the two months, the all items index reflected higher costs for food and beverages, housing, and recreation as six of the eight major categories recorded increases of 0.3 percent or greater. Among the special indexes compiled, energy costs declined 2.8 percent as lower costs for utility natural gas service more than offset higher Georgia Department of Labor The formula Following is the formula for figur- ing Consumer Price Index changes from one point in time to another. Food costs rose 2.6 percent over the two months, as prices increased for food at home. Excluding food and energy, the CPI-U for Atlanta has moved up 0.8 percent since February 2001. Among the major index groups, the food and beverages index rose 2.5 percent over two months after recording a 2.3 percent increase in the JanuaryFebruary pricing period. Housing costs advanced 0.3 percent after recording a 2.7 percent rise in the January-February pricing period. Other indexes reported include the medical care index that advanced 0.7 percent in the March-April pricing period after rising 2.0 percent in JanuaryFebruary. Over the past six months, the medical care index has consistently outpaced increases in the all items index. Consumers' costs for medical care in the Atlanta area now stand 6.1 percent higher then they were in April 2000. Figures show that the metropolitan area's average room rate for April 2001 was $78.65, down 0.9 percent from the previous year's rate of $79.33. Year to date metro Atlanta's hotel occupancy was 65.1 percent, down 0.9 percent from the 2000 occupancy that was 65.7 percent. The year to date average room rate remained unchanged at $82.93 from the previous year. Other metropolitan cities experiencing decreases in occupancy includes Chicago, Detroit, Dallas, New Orleans, New York and San Francisco. All of these cities posted double digit drops in occupancy for the month of April when compared to April 2000 levels. Across the nation luxury hotels were the hardest hit sector where occupancy decreased 6.3 percent, upscale and mid-price hotels slipped 3.3 and 3.7 percent respectively, the economy sector dropped 2.7 percent and budget hotels occupancy remained unchanged. Overall, the total hotel occu- pancy for the United States in April decreased 3.7 percent to 62.5 percent occupancy from April's 2000 rate of 64.9 percent; however, the average room rate for the nation was up in April 2001 a modest 1.2 percent compared to last year. Hotels are now offering discounted prices and special deals across the nation to encourage business travel. Pricecutting is among the first signs that the cyclical economic slowdown is starting to moderate inflation. As the economy slows down and business margins shrink corporate America will look for various ways to cut costs and business travel is usually at the top of the list. 4 Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators / June 2001 Georgia Department of Labor Data Summary April 2001 Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators Apr 2001 Mar 2001 Apr 2000 Percent Change Mar 2001 to Apr 2001 Percent Change Apr 2000 to Apr 2001 Nonagricultural Employment 2,226,939 Wholesale Employment 181,011 Retail Employment 409,196 Services Employment 687,617 Manufacturing Employment 218,848 Government Employment 272,960 Construction Employment 119,176 Transp. & Pub.
