Thurmond, Commissioner An Equal OpportunityEmployer/Programs Auxiliary Aids and Services Available Upon Request to Individuals With Disabilities Georgia Department of Labor Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators / April 2001 1 Introduction Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators, Monthly Report, is designed to provide in a single publication data on a number of indicators used to measure movement of the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area's economy. The indicators have been collected and disseminated for many years by private and governmental agencies, but not under a single cover. Contributing agencies include Georgia's Department of Labor, the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, F.W. Dodge, McGraw-Hill Information Group, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, Cobb Community Transit System, Smith Travel Research and HSH Associates, Financial Publishers. All data in this report are seasonally adjusted except Average 30-Year, Average 15-Year Fixed Mortgage Rates, and Average One-Year Adjustable Mortgage Rate on Page 15, and those contained in the Metropolitan Atlanta Consumer Price Index chart on page 3. Data are presented in graphic and tabular form. Each series shows movement over a 24-month period. Where appropriate, companion graphs and tables show data that have been deflated by the U.S. Consumer Price Index or the U.S. Construction Price Index. The purpose is to adjust for inflation and show growth in constant dollars. The purpose of this publication is to serve the business and professional communities, economic developers, economists, educators and others who have need for information on Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area economic trends. Workforce Information and Analysis welcomes comments, suggestions or questions concerning Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators. Please address letters to Stephen Matta, Workforce Information and Analysis, Georgia Department of Labor, 148 International Boulevard, Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751. The average cost of living for a professional / managerial lifestyle in Atlanta ranked eleventh in the third quarter of 2000 with an index of 102.0. The average index of all 311 metropolitan areas surveyed is 100. Published by the American Chamber of Commerce Research Association (ACCRA), the Cost of Living Index reported increases in transportation and the cost of miscellaneous goods and services, while housing and utilities showed sharp declines over second quarter. Grocery costs for the 20-county Atlanta metropolitan area where down 1.3 percent. The ACCRA Index measures price changes in the areas of consumer goods and services excluding taxes and non-consumer expenditures. The survey is based on 59 items for which prices are collected quarterly by local chambers of commerce or economic development organizations in each urban area. Among all 18 major metropolitan areas, Atlanta's transportation cost index of 108.3, was 0.9 percent lower than the average. The city with the lowest transportation costs was Los Angeles, with an index of 95.6, or 12.5 percent below the average for the three month period. The composite index is a weighted average of six components, all of which are highest in the New York / Manhattan area. Among the 17 metropolitan areas excluding New York, the grocery items index ranged from 116.6 in Boston, to 91.5 in Houston. Atlanta's grocery index was 102.2, which is 1.8 percent below the average. Housing in the New York/Manhattan area averaged nearly five times the cost of housing in Atlanta. Excluding New York, the average housing cost index was 128.3, 20.3 percent higher than Atlanta's index. From second to third quarter, the cost of housing decreased 8.6 percent in Atlanta. The index of utilities declined 9.1 percent from the second to third quarter, or 38.5 percent below the average. By comparison, Riverside, California, had the highest healthcare costs outside Manhattan, almost 15 percent over the average, while Pittsburgh was nearly 33 percent below average. The cost of miscellaneous goods and services in Atlanta was below the average at 101. This includes some apparel, entertainment and nonnecessity items. 4 Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators / April 2001 Georgia Department of Labor Data Summary February 2001 Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators Feb 2001 Jan 2001 Feb 2000 Percent Change Jan 2001 to Feb 2001 Percent Change Feb 2000 to Feb 2001 Nonagricultural Employment 2,225,133 Wholesale Employment 180,387 Retail Employment 402,786 Services Employment 690,495 Manufacturing Employment 218,748 Government Employment 271,960 Construction Employment 121,304 Transp. & Pub.
