Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims rise in March

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 31,225 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in March, up five percent from February. Initial claims were down from 31,383 filed in March 2006 for an over-the-year decrease of one-half of one percent.

The slight increase in claims in March was mostly due to layoffs in manufacturing. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.

The 14 metro areas of the state and the changes in their initial claims from February to March are
as follows:
Albany, up 48, or nine percent, from 535 to 583. Athens, up 117, or 29 percent, from 410 to 527. Atlanta, up 336, or 2.7 percent, from 12,591 to 12,927. Augusta, up 221, or 22 percent, from 1,001 to 1,222. Brunswick, down 12, or 4.6 percent, from 264 to 252. Columbus, down eight, or 1.3 percent, from 621 to 613. Dalton, up 389, or 28 percent, from 1,373 to 1,762. Gainesville, down 117, or 22 percent, from 527 to 410. Hinesville, down 32, or 20 percent, from 161 to 129.
