FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Georgia's unemployment rate increases in October ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the state's unemployment rate rose to 4.7 percent in October, up one-tenth of one percent from 4.6 percent in September and two-tenths of one percent from 4.5 percent in October 2006. The current state rate is threetenths of one percent higher than the U.S. unadjusted rate of 4.4 percent. The state's rate rose in October because 4,471 more jobless residents were added to the unemployment rolls, while 20,739 more job seekers entered the workforce. From September to October, preliminary data show Georgia added 15,200 payroll jobs. The 14 metro areas of the state and their job changes include: Albany, down 300, or one-half of one percent, from 65,900 to 65,600. Athens, up 700, or eight-tenths of one percent, from 83,800 to 84,500. Atlanta, up 10,300, or four-tenths of one percent, from 2,466,800 to 2,477,100. Augusta, up 400, or two-tenths of one percent, from 214,900 to 215,300. Brunswick, down 300, or seven-tenths of one percent, from 45,800 to 45,500. Columbus, up 100, or one-tenth of one percent, from 123,100 to 123,200. Dalton, down 300, or four-tenths of one percent, from 80,100 to 79,800. Gainesville, unchanged at 76,300. Hinesville, up 100, or one-half of one percent, from 18,900 to 19,000. Macon, up 200, or two-tenths of one percent, from 101,400 to 101,600. Rome, up 200, or four-tenths of one percent, from 45,000 to 45,200. Savannah, up 700, or four-tenths of one percent, from 161,500 to 162,200.
