Metro Savannah's unemployment rate unchanged in October 
 
ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the unemployment rate in the metro Savannah area remained unchanged at 3.9 percent from September to October. 
 
Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate rose to 4.7 percent in October, up one-tenth of one percent from 4.6 percent in September. 
 
Georgia's unemployment rate increased, contrary to the national trend toward lower unemployment, primarily because of a large number of layoffs and a job growth rate that is not keeping up with the number of new job seekers. A total of 48,342 new job seekers entered the workforce, while newly-created non-farm jobs rose by only 17,600, a four-tenths percent increase.
