Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 May 23, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NORTH GEORGIA'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPS TO 3.4 PERCENT ATLANTA -State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the unemployment rate in the North Georgia area declined by five-tenths percent to 3.4 percent in April, down from 3.9 percent in March. The area's jobless rate was 3.3 percent in April, 2001. The area's rate declined because some textile and other manufacturing workers who were temporarily off their jobs in March returned to work. Meanwhile, an increase of 15,500 new jobs statewide lowered Georgia's unemployment rate to 4.2 percent in April, down four-tenths percent, from 4.6 percent in March. The state's jobless rate was 3.5 percent in April, 2001. "Since the first of the year, we have seen slow, but steady job growth," said Thurmond, "and these new jobs, along with a decline in the unemployment rate, are positive signs of a slow but steady recovery of our economy." While the economy shows sign of improving, Georgia continues to experience some layoffs and the labor department is servicing 83,000 unemployment insurance claims. "We are making every effort to help these citizens find their place in the workforce," Thurmond continued. "In fact, on June 2 from 2-4 p.m., we at the Georgia Department of Labor will sponsor our 8th annual job fair televised statewide on Georgia Public Television. We'll have available jobs from throughout the state. Also, career development experts and employers will be on hand to tell viewers about job seeking techniques and strategies that will help them plan successful careers. file:///E|/pressrel%20from%201-98%20to%20present/fy02630.htm (1 of 2)8/16/2005 8:08:45 AM Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Plus, we'll tell viewers about job training opportunities and even how to access them at little or no cost. I encourage everyone to watch." Georgia labor market data are not seasonally adjusted and are available at www.dol.state.ga.us.
