Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 March 28, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE METRO ATHENS' UNEMPLOYMENT RATE UNCHANGED AT 2.8 PERCENT ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that metro Athens' unemployment rate was unchanged at 2.8 percent from January to February, but it was down from 3.0 percent in February of 2001. The area's rate declined over the year because some jobs were added in state and local government and in the service-related industries. Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.4 percent from January to February, but it was up from 3.7 percent in February of 2001. A total of 14,600 new jobs were added in Georgia during February, the first time since last October that the state has had job growth. Non-farm jobs rose to 3,851,000 in February, up by four-tenths percent, from 3,836,400 in January. "The report on job growth is yet another piece of good economic news that we have received in recent weeks," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "It follows a February decline in initial unemployment insurance claims. Taken together, these reports indicate an improving economy and the beginnings of a firming job market. However, this news must be viewed against a background of 180,000 jobless workers across the state. We are making every effort to get these people back to work. Clearly, we have a long way to go." The job increases in February came in such manufacturing industries as transportation equipment, textiles, industrial machinery, and fabricated metals, as well as business services, temporary employment agencies, health and educational services, and engineering and management. file:///E|/pressrel%20from%201-98%20to%20present/fy02502.htm (1 of 2)8/11/2005 9:16:07 AM Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Corresponding Tables and Graphs Reflecting Data NEWS MEDIA NEEDING MORE INFORMATION MAY CALL (404) 656-3032.
