Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 April 27, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SHORTAGE OF SKILLED WORKERS THREATENS COOSA VALLEY'S ECONOMY ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that a persistent mismatch between available jobs and available workers threatens to slow down the Coosa Valley area's economy. "Growth in the Coosa Valley area's workforce is not keeping pace with the growth of jobs," Thurmond said. "Last year, the Coosa Valley area's economy generated new jobs for 4,896 area residents, but the civilian workforce has declined by 202 workers. Unless we increase the size of our workforce, the shortage could threaten the area's future economic prosperity. "We can narrow the gap by providing non-traditional workers with the training and other assistance needed to bring them into the workforce. For example, we are partnering with the Department of Technical and Adult Education, the public schools, and others to 'upskill' untapped segments of our indigenous population. With proper training, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, former welfare recipients, and rehabilitated ex-offenders can play a major role in the solving of our state's labor shortage." The strong job growth and lack of skilled workers has led to lower unemployment in the Coosa Valley area. March's 2.9 percent unemployment rate was down from 3.1 percent in February and 4.9 percent in March 1999. Georgia's unemployment rate of 3.4 percent in March is the lowest ever recorded for that month. The jobless rate was down from 3.5 percent in February and 4.2 percent in March of 1999.
