LABOR COMMISSIONER PRAISES MEDIAONE, AT&T FOR SUPPORT OF CENSUS 2000

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that MediaOne and AT&T are to be commended for their support of Census 2000. Media One, metropolitan Atlanta's primary provider of Broadband services, in partnership with AT&T, has produced a series of public service announcements (PSAs) encouraging citizens to "fill out the census and mail it back."

Thurmond is one of a group of elected officials who appear in the PSAs currently seen on most of the major cable TV networks carried by MediaOne, as well as the company's public affairs programming on TV-33 and MediaOne Community Television.

"The census offers an opportunity for all of us to do something important for Georgia," said Thurmond. "The information gathered by Census 2000 will be used to determine funding for local job training programs that will help Georgians earn higher salaries to better support themselves and their families. Employers will then be able to hire better-trained, more highly-skilled workers.

"Since the census is taken every ten years, this information will be used throughout the coming decade," the commissioner continued. "Therefore, it's very important that everyone takes the time to complete the census form and mail it back in the postage-paid envelope supplied with it. This is a chance for people to make a difference for their communities and state.

"This public service project by MediaOne and AT&T is a good example of the private sector working with elected officials toward the common good of the people of our state." The 30second PSAs are being telecast for a month.

Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release
"We are excited about donating our production facilities and the resources of our Broadband network to the United States Department of Commerce and the Census 2000 effort," said Ellen Filipiak, senior vice president for MediaOne's Atlanta region.

Michael Grover, MediaOne's director of Government Relations, stressed the importance of the census. "In addition to impacting such important matters as job training, education, health care, and transportation, the census will effect the number of seats Georgia will have in the U.S. House of Representatives."
