Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 March 2, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE METRO SAVANNAH'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE UP SLIGHTLY IN TIGHT LABOR MARKET ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that metro Savannah's January unemployment rate rose to 3.4 percent, up slightly from 3.3 percent in December. The area's jobless rate was 4.0 percent in January 1999. The slight increase in the rate came primarily because of layoffs involving temporary jobs during the holidays and those requiring outdoor work which could not be done because of winter weather. "We continue to have a very tight labor market in the Savannah area," said Thurmond. "There are simply not enough skilled workers to meet increasing demand. Even though our labor force has grown, the increase in available workers is not keeping pace with job growth. Many of the new skilled jobs are being filled by people moving into the state. "Although skilled labor moving here from other areas will continue to help us meet the demand, I believe development of our own 'indigenous workforce' must be given a higher priority," Thurmond continued. "We cannot overlook the potential of segments of our existing population, such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and former welfare recipients. Eliminating barriers to employment that these groups face is critical to meeting the growing need for qualified employees." Georgia's unemployment rate was 3.3 percent in January, unchanged from December. The state's jobless rate was 3.8 percent in January 1999. Labor market data are now available on the Georgia Department of Labor's Web site at www.dol. file:///E|/pressrel%20from%201-98%20to%20present/a00376.htm (1 of 2)10/27/2004 12:02:15 PM Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release state.ga.us.
