STATE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE UP SLIGHTLY IN TIGHT LABOR MARKET 
 
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that Georgia's January unemployment rate rose to 3.3 percent, up slightly from 3.2 percent in December. The increase came primarily because of layoffs involving temporary jobs during the holidays and those requiring outdoor work which could not be done because of the winter weather. The state's jobless rate was 3.6 percent in January 1999. 
 
"We continue to have a very tight labor market here in Georgia," said Thurmond. "There are simply not enough skilled workers to meet increasing demand. Even though our labor force has grown significantly, the increase in available workers is not keeping pace with job growth. Many of the new skilled jobs are being filled by people moving into the state. For example, in the past year, more than two-thirds of the new computer programming jobs in the Atlanta area were filled by newcomers. 
 
"Although skilled labor moving here from other areas will continue to help us meet the demand, I believe development of our own 'indigenous workforce' must be given a higher priority. We cannot overlook the potential of segments of our existing population, such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and former welfare recipients. Eliminating barriers to employment that these groups face is critical to meeting the growing need for qualified employees." 
 
Georgia's nonfarm employment declined to 3,926,500 in January, down by 69,200 from 
December. While those jobs were lost temporarily due to seasonal factors, the overall number of jobs was up by 165,300, or 4.4 percent, in the past 12 months. During that same period, the state's total civilian workforce rose by 83,990, or 2.1 percent, to 4,067,847. 
 
In the past year, job growth has occurred in all seven of the state's major metropolitan areas. They

are as follows: -- Albany, jobs up by 900, or 1.5 percent, from 58,400 to 59,300. 
 
-- Athens, jobs up by 800, or 1.1 percent, from 72,600 to 73,400. 
 
-- Atlanta, jobs up by 114,200, or 5.5 percent, from 2,066,600 to 2,180,800. 
 
-- Augusta, jobs up by 7,100, or 3.6 percent, from 195,500 to 202,600. 
 
-- Columbus, jobs up by 3,900, or 3.3 percent, from 118,200 to 122,100. 
 
-- Macon, jobs up by 3,600, or 2.4 percent, from 148,500 to 152,100. 
 
-- Savannah, jobs up by 2,900, or 2.2 percent, from 133,800 to 136,700.
