Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 January 27, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE METRO ATLANTA'S 2.6 PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN DECEMBER LOWEST EVER RECORDED IN THE AREA ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that December's 2.6 percent unemployment rate was the lowest monthly rate ever recorded in metropolitan Atlanta, since the state began keeping records for the metro areas in 1973. The December rate was down from 2.8 percent in November. The rate was also 2.8 percent in December of 1998. The rate declined slightly in December because temporary workers were hired in trade and servicerelated industries for the holiday shopping season. "You have to go back nearly 30 years when our population and workforce in the Atlanta area were much smaller than they are today to find unemployment this low," Thurmond said. "With an area economy that is generating thousands of new jobs each year, our focus has shifted from finding jobs for people to finding people for jobs. To meet this challenge, we will be increasing our efforts to partner with the Department of Technical and Adult Education, the local public schools, and whatever other resources are available to us to 'upskill' our workforce with additional skill training and education. In a sense, our local labor department offices have become retailers of trained workers." Strong job growth continued in metro Atlanta in 1999, with the total number of jobs reaching a record 2,206,900 in December. During the year, 113,600 new jobs were added, up from 2,093,300 in December of 1998, an increase of 5.4 percent. Georgia's 3.2 percent unemployment rate in December was the lowest monthly rate ever recorded in the state. The rate was down from 3.4 percent in November. It was 3.6 percent in December of 1998. file:///E|/pressrel%20from%201-98%20to%20present/a00324.htm (1 of 2)10/18/2004 12:52:01 PM Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Labor market data are now available on the Georgia Department of Labor's web site at www.dol. state.ga.us NEWS MEDIA NEEDING MORE INFORMATION MAY CALL (404) 656-3032.
