Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 September 23, 1999 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE METRO ATLANTA'S 3.2 PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE LOWEST EVER RECORDED FOR AUGUST ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that metro Atlanta's 3.2 percent unemployment rate in August was the lowest ever recorded for that month. The rate was down from 3.3 percent in July 1999 and August 1998. The rate declined because 13,200 service-industry jobs were added at shopping malls, restaurants and bars, temporary employment agencies, day care centers for children, and some among truckers and warehouse workers. "Atlanta continues to have low unemployment and steady job growth," Thurmond said. "But, as a result of low unemployment, Atlanta and many other areas of the state are experiencing severe shortages of skilled labor. The current labor shortages have opened the doors to employment for thousands of 'non-traditional' workers, such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities, former welfare recipients, immigrants and rehabilitated ex-offenders. "All of these diverse groups are adding their skills and talents to a workforce that is straining to meet the ever-growing demand for qualified employees. And while some companies that move to Georgia may bring their own employees with them, an important part of our workforce development strategy is the upgrading of the skills and training of our 'indigenous workforce' -those who already live here." During the past year, nonfarm jobs in metro Atlanta have increased to 2,117,900, up 72,200, a growth rate of 3.5 percent, with most of the jobs in trade and service-related industries. file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/mhannum/Desktop/pressrel%20from%201-98%20to%20present/a00138.htm (1 of 2)11/23/2004 11:01:48 AM Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Georgia's 3.9 percent unemployment rate in August was the lowest recorded for that month in 26 years.
