Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 August 2, 1999 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE STATE LABOR DEPARTMENT TO CO-SPONSOR JOB FAIR IN VALDOSTA FOR LEVI STRAUSS WORKERS AND OTHER JOB SEEKERS ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor, along with several Lowndes County organizations, will sponsor a job fair Thursday, Aug. 5, for about 755 workers laid off at the Levi Strauss plant in Valdosta and other job seekers in the area. The Levi Strauss plant closed in April. The job fair will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mathis City Auditorium at 2311 Williams Street, across from the South Georgia Medical Center, in Valdosta. "This job fair is an excellent example of the public and private sectors working as partners to address the needs of this community," said Thurmond. "The job fair will help inform job seekers about opportunities with reputable employers, while the employers will get to meet with experienced workers who can help fill many of the jobs they have open. And, helping to put these people back to work is good for the local economy. It's a win-win situation for all." Sponsors of the job fair include the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, the Valdosta Daily Times, Keep Lowndes/Valdosta Beautiful, the labor department's Valdosta office, and the Council for Adult Experiential Learning (CAEL) of Chicago, the national outplacement service for Levi Strauss & Co. A feature of the job fair will be displays by laid-off workers who will show how they have used their severance benefits from Levi Strauss to begin new businesses in the area. They include landscaping and lawn care, laundry and dry cleaning, catering for weddings and other events, fiber glass repair, day care center, food service, antique and dress shops, home maintenance, asphalt repair, and a video service. file:///E|/pressrel%20from%201-98%20to%20present/a00078.htm (1 of 2)9/22/2004 11:36:44 AM Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release More than 30 employers will participate in the job fair.
