Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 December 23, 1999 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE COOSA VALLEY AREA'S 3.1 PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DOWN FROM 3.4 PERCENT IN OCTOBER AND 3.5 PERCENT A YEAR AGO ATLANTA - State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that November's 3.1 percent unemployment rate in the Coosa Valley Area was down from 3.4 percent in October and 3.5 percent in November 1998. The rate declined because retailers and other employers in the service industries, such as temporary employment agencies and security firms, hired additional workers for the holiday shopping season. "Having low unemployment is great news for Coosa Valley Area workers and for people who are seeking to enter the workforce," Thurmond said. "For employers, the news is not so good. The tight labor market is making it difficult to fill available positions and keep pace with a strong demand for goods and services." "Employers should take some comfort in the knowledge that the state and its private sector partners are working to ease the shortage," said Thurmond. "With the impending implementation of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, we have important new tools designed to recruit, train and expand the pool of available skilled workers, and to match those workers with jobs that are now going unfilled." Georgia's 3.4 percent unemployment rate in November tied the state's all-time monthly record low set in May 1971. The state's jobless rate in November was down from 3.7 percent in October and 3.8 percent in November 1998. Labor market data are now available on the Georgia Department of Labor's web site at www.dol. file:///E|/pressrel%20from%201-98%20to%20present/a00299.htm (1 of 2)10/18/2004 12:25:56 PM Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release state.ga.us NEWS MEDIA NEEDING MORE INFORMATION MAY CALL (404) 656-3032.
