Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 December 16, 1999 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GEORGIA'S 3.4 PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE MATCHES THE LOWEST EVER RECORDED IN THE STATE ATLANTA - State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that November's 3.4 percent unemployment rate tied Georgia's all-time monthly record low set in May 1971. The November rate was down from 3.7 percent in October and 3.8 percent in November 1998. "Matching our all-time low unemployment rate is great news for Georgia workers and for Georgians who are seeking to enter the workforce," Thurmond said. "For employers, the news is not so good. The tight labor market is making it difficult to fill available positions and keep pace with a strong demand for goods and services." "Employers should take some comfort in the knowledge that the state and its private sector partners are working to ease the shortage," said Thurmond. "With the impending implementation of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, we have important new tools designed to recruit, train and expand the pool of available skilled workers and to match those workers with jobs that are now going unfilled." Thurmond added, "the drop in the unemployment rate marks the 24th consecutive year that the state's jobless rate has declined from October to November. The decline in the rate at this time of year is due largely to retailers hiring temporary workers for the holiday shopping season." During the past year, Georgia's workforce, which has grown by 79,000, or 1.9 percent, has not kept pace with the state's job growth, which has increased by 141,500, or 3.7 percent. New jobs have been added in all seven metropolitan areas of the state. The metro areas and their job increases from November 1998 to November 1999 are as follows: file:///E|/pressrel%20from%201-98%20to%20present/a00288.htm (1 of 2)10/8/2004 12:48:52 PM Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release - Albany, 60,100, up 400, or seven-tenths percent. - Athens, 76,900, up 2,200, or 2.9 percent. - Atlanta, 2,180,000, up 100,200, or 4.8 percent. - Augusta, 200,900, up 1,900, or 1.0 percent. - Columbus, 123,800, up 3,300, or 2.7 percent. - Macon, 152,500, up 1,300, or nine-tenths percent. - Savannah, 138,800, up 3,100, or 2.3 percent.
