Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 June 25, 1998 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE METRO ATHENS' JOBLESS RATE DECLINES TO 2.6 PERCENT IN MAY ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that the unemployment rate in metro Athens declined to 2.6 percent in May, down slightly from 2.7 percent in April. The area's jobless rate was also 2.7 percent in May 1997. "Metro Athens added several hundred jobs in service-related industries, including some in wholesale and retail trade, at temporary employment agencies and packaging firms, and at state and local governmental institutions," Fullerton said. The number of nonfarm jobs in Athens rose by 900 to 75,200 in May, while unemployment declined to 1,941, down by 106. The employment picture for the area continues to be very bright. The number of nonfarm jobs has risen by 2,800, or 3.9 percent, in the past year. In May 1997, the number of nonfarm jobs totaled 72,400. Georgia's unemployment rate in May was 3.8 percent, a slight increase from April's rate of 3.6 percent. The rate in May 1997 was 4.4 percent.
