Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 March 26, 1998 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GEORGIA MOUNTAINS' JOBLESS RATE RISES TO 3.2 PERCENT IN FEBRUARY ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that the unemployment rate in the Georgia Mountains area rose to 3.2 percent in February, up from 3.1 percent in January. The area's jobless rate was 4.3 percent in February 1997. "While the area had about 1,500 more residents working, another 140 entered the job market looking for work," Fullerton said. "They were unable to land a job right away, and while they are searching, they are counted as being unemployed. However, with the arrival of Spring, more seasonal jobs will be available, which will make it easier for them to find work." The area's civilian labor force, which is the number of people working plus those unemployed but actively looking for a job, totaled 207,114. Of that number, 200,506 had jobs and 6,608 did not. Georgia's unemployment rate rose to 4.1 percent in February, up from 3.8 percent in January, but down from 4.8 percent in February 1997. Labor market data are now available on the Georgia Department of Labor web site at www.dol.state.ga.us NEWS MEDIA NEEDING MORE INFORMATION MAY CALL (404) 656-3032 E-mail: communications@dol.state.ga.us.
