FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MACON'S JOBLESS RATE RISES TO 5.1 PERCENT IN FEBRUARY

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that the unemployment rate in Macon increased to 5.1 percent in February, up from 4.2 percent in January. The area's jobless rate was 4.5 percent in February 1997.

"There were two main reasons for the increase in the rate," Fullerton said. "First, the area lost 100 jobs in trade. Also, about 1,400 people entered the job market looking for work, who were unable to land a job right away, and while they are searching, they are counted as being unemployed. However, with the arrival of Spring, more seasonal jobs will be available, which will make it easier for them to find work."

Nonfarm employment totaled 150,600, up from 150,200 in January, and up from 146,000 in February 1997, a 3.2 percent increase.

And the area's civilian labor force, which is the number of people working plus those unemployed but actively looking for a job, rose by 2,067 during the month, which suggests the area's labor force is keeping pace with the job market.

Georgia's unemployment rate rose to 4.1 percent in February, up from 3.8 percent in January, but down from 4.8 percent in February 1997.
Labor market data are now available on the Georgia Department of Labor web site at www.dol.state.ga.us
