Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 March 19, 1998 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE UNEMPLOYMENT UP IN FEBRUARY DESPITE INCREASE IN JOBS ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that Georgia's unemployment rate rose to 4.1 percent in February, despite an increase in jobs. This is the lowest jobless rate for the month of February in 25 years. It is up from 3.8 percent in January, but down from 4.8 percent in February 1997. "The rate increase was brought about by a combination of factors," said Fullerton."We had fewer jobs available in retail trade, primarily at the larger department stores, and some textile plants made temporary lay-offs so they could do equipment maintenance and deplete inventories. Also, we had more than 16,000 people enter the job market looking for work, who were unable to land a job right away. However, at the same time, we had a good increase in the number of jobs, which will make it easier for them to find work." The number of nonfarm jobs in Georgia rose to 3,673,700, an increase of 18,200. "The mild weather and tax season get much of the credit for the job increase," Fullerton said. "Outdoor construction picked up and amusement centers, such as Six Flags, were able to conduct training sessions outside for seasonal workers before the parks open in the spring. Normally this training isn't done this early. Other seasonal workers were also added at income tax preparation offices, temporary employment agencies, security firms and restaurants." Nearly three of every four jobs added during the month were in the Atlanta area, where nonfarm employment rose by 13,100 to 1,999,000. The other metro areas are as follows: -- Albany, down by 200 from 59,400 to 59,200. -- Athens, up by 600 from 72,900 to 73,500. -- Augusta, down by 100 from 193,600 to 193,500. -- Columbus, up by 200 from 115,900 to 116,100. -- Macon, up by 400 from 150,200 to 150,600. -- Savannah, down by 100 from 133,100 to 133,000.
