Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 January 29, 1998 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GEORGIA'S JOBLESS RATE RISES SLIGHTLY TO 3.8 PERCENT IN DECEMBER, AS STATE SETS ALL-TIME HIGH WORK FORCE RECORD ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that Georgia's unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.8 percent in December, its lowest point for the month in 25 years. The jobless rate was up from 3.7 percent in November. It was 4.4 percent in December 1996. In December, the state also set a new civilian work force record at 3,943,242, up from the previous record of 3,942,629 in November. "Unemployment was virtually unchanged in December," Fullerton said. "But, it's expected to go up in January, when seasonal retail and construction workers are usually laid off. In fact, out of the last 20 years, unemployment has gone up 13 times in January. Yet, even with the seasonal layoffs, we continue to set work force and employment records. Our current job expansion actually began six years ago, and since that time, we have added some 800,000 new jobs." In the past year, Georgia has added 133,100 new jobs, up by 3.7 percent from 3,602,100 in December 1996. Ninety-five percent of the new jobs created have been in trade and service-related industries. In December 1997, the state added 25,400 new jobs, as nonfarm employment rose to a record high 3,735,200, up from 3,709,800 in November. Retailers added 16,600 seasonal workers and temporary employment agencies and security firms added another 2,500 for the holidays, while 1,200 construction workers were laid off.
