Georgia Department of Labor Suite 642 148 International Boulevard N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-1751 (404)656-3032 January 16, 1998 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PEPSI COLA OF ROME RECEIVES OUTSTANDING EMPLOYER AWARD ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner David Poythress announced today that Pepsi Cola of Rome has been presented a 1997 Success Track Outstanding Employer Award. "Pepsi Cola's commitment to its employees and community begins by maintaining a safe drug-free work environment," Poythress said. "For employees who test positive for drugs, rehabilitation is available. Then, after rehabilitation, employees return to work and continue to be tested monthly to make sure they stay drugfree. The company's commitment to safety, for employees and the public, is one reason the company provides financial assistance to help drivers enhance their skills by earning a commercial drivers license. And, other benefits, paid for through a company allotment called flex dollars, can be tailored to fit the individual employee needs." The Outstanding Employer Award is presented jointly by the Georgia Department of Labor and Georgia Public Television (GPTV), which co-produce Success Track, a weekly television program about career and economic issues. The award was created in 1995 to recognize employers who are leaders in providing educational and job-training opportunities and benefit packages which enhance the careers of their employees. Pepsi Cola of Rome is a distributor of sports and soft drinks, fruit juices and bottled water. The company distributes about 1.5 million cases of liquid each year to 1,200 retailers in northwest Georgia. The company's commitment to its community includes providing local schools with computer programs to help students plan their careers. Pepsi Cola of Rome and 10 other award recipients were featured in a special episode of Success Track entitled Investing in People in December. The special will be shown again in the Spring. The other recipients are Ayres Corp., Albany; Crown Crafts of Calhoun; Synthetic Industries, Chickamauga; W.C. Bradley Co. and Synovus Financial Corp., Columbus; Collins and Aikman, Dalton; Roper Corp. of LaFayette; Shorewood Packaging Corp. of Georgia, LaGrange; Armstrong World Industries, Macon; and Coats American of Thomasville. Success Track is broadcast Thursdays at 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. over the nine-station GPTV network.
