Saturday, July 31 at 7:00 p.m., the Franklin Pond String Quartet, that includes members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, will perform Haydn, Dvorak and Beethoven for your listening enjoyment. Sunday, August 1 at 7:00 p.m., the Franklin Pond Chamber Music Student Showcase concert will include music by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Kodaly and Smetana. Franklin Pond Chamber Music is a highly praised summer music program for serious young musicians, with a faculty composed of musicians from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The students, ranging in age from 14 to 17, are serious artists who have undergone a rigorous audition process to be part of the program. As participants in the six-week summer seminar, they have the opportunity to receive artistic guidance in master classes from nationally known musicians of the highest caliber from all over the United States. Originally, chamber music referred to a type of classical music that was performed in a small space such as a house or a palace chamber. And many of the great master composers originally intended their music to be played in these smaller rooms thus making the elegant and historic Mistletoe Coage the perfect venue for string quartet performances. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-877-4-jekyll, at the Jekyll Island Visitor Information Center or at the door. Seating is limited - prior purchase is encouraged. HISTORY... Adult male terrapins are signi cantly smaller than females. Seven subspecies have been formally described. Malaclemys terrapin centrata, the Carolina diamondback terrapin, ranges from Cape Ha eras to northern Florida and is the subspecies that occurs in Georgia. Courtship and mating take place in March and April and the nesting season occurs from early May until mid July in Georgia. Nesting typically takes place during the day. e general sites selected for nesting by the terrapins are located in areas above the high tide with minimum erosion. Over the last century, populations of diamondback terrapins in coastal Georgia and other parts of their range have been adversely a ected by a variety of human activities, such as coastal development, harvest for terrapin stew, drowning in commercial and recreational crab traps, and mortality on roads. Two to three hundred reproductively mature female diamondback terrapins are injured and killed by motor vehicles each year during the three month nesting season on the Jekyll Island causeway. e causeway is a perfect spot for the terrapins to nest because it is high ground and unlikely to ood. Unfortunately, the terrapins are not aware of the heavy automobile tra c on the causeway when they cross the road. It is our responsibility to SLOW DOWN while driving on the causeway during the terrapin nesting season and watch out for them when they are crossing. If you happen to observe a terrapin crossing the road, rst make sure it is safe for you to pull over and get out of your car to help the terrapin across. Carefully pick the terrapin up and place her o the road in the direction she was travelling prior to picking her up. If you nd an injured terrapin, safely take it o the road and call the Georgia Sea Turtle Center at 912-635-4444 as soon as possible. e Diamondback Terrapin Conservation Project has grown within the past three years. We are now fortunate to have a collaborative e ort with other institutions in the surrounding area. is allows us to expand our research of diamondback terrapins. e Georgia Sea Turtle Center along with e University of Georgia and Savannah River Ecology Lab monitor the Jekyll Island causeway during the terrapin nesting season. We record the location of each terrapin found, whether it is healthy, injured or dead. ese data have been instrumental in determining hot spots for terrapin crossing and nesting. We have placed 10 arti cial nest mounds in these areas to encourage the terrapins to nest without crossing the road. rough our previous studies, we also determined that depredation of terrapin nests by raccoons is very common on the causeway. For this reason, we have placed specially designed caging on top of the nest mounds that allow the terrapins to enter but not raccoons. is technique has proven useful in increasing nesting success in other turtle species, thus we are hopeful that it will reduce the number of terrapins being hit on the causeway. Injured terrapins are transported to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center for emergency care and rehabilitation. Additionally, eggs are retrieved from both injured and dead terrapins for arti cial incubation, hatching and eventual release. Over one hundred terrapins have been successfully hatched out and released back into the marsh. For more information about e Diamondback Terrapin Conservation Project come by and visit the center. There you will meet reenactors portraying Major Horton, a British colonial officer, and his company of soldiers and indentured servants, in a joint living history program offered by Fort Frederica National Monument and the Jekyll Island Museum. Through a variety of activities, guests will have an opportunity to discover the colonial life of the island in the year 1742. These activities are designed to share information about Horton, his family, his servants, his Jekyll Island property, and their role in colonial society during that life-changing year. John Hunter, the Director of Historic Resources for the Jekyll Island Museum, said 1742 was a momentous time on Jekyll Island. "Horton was placed in command of a new grenadier company of thirty men. His wife and children finally joined him after being an ocean apart for many years. Fort Frederica was raided by the Spanish. His house was burned down when the Spanish retreated, and his crops and livestock were destroyed!" Hunter exclaimed. "That all happened by mid-July!" Horton, the first Englishman to own Jekyll Island, built the original Horton House, two-story wooden structure, in 1736. It was destroyed by fire in July of 1742, when JEKYLL ISLAND MUSEUM TOUR SCHEDULE Passport to the Century Travel into the past. The house that still stands today was rebuilt on the foundations of the earlier burnt building by late the following year. With the help of his indentured servants, Horton rebuilt. This sturdy tabby house still stands today, one of the earliest remaining tabby structures in Georgia. During the living history program that commemorates Major Horton's efforts to rebuild the island, musket demonstrations, colonial games, food and drink, and interactions with interpreters will offer active fun for everyone. Watch as Major Horton oversees musket drills, shares tales from the recent Battle of Bloody Marsh, and describes military life in Colonial Georgia. Major Horton and son Thomas. Major Horton, portrayed by Jon Burpee, was a family man as well as a leader at Fort Frederica in General Oglethorpe's absence. Horton's servants will demonstrate a variety of crafts such as 18th century woodworking, carding, spinning and dying wool, processing Spanish Moss, candle making, and butter making, which were all skills of the day. To take a break from such labors, guests can also try their talents in a variety of 18th century entertainments on the front lawn. Covers ALL pets including mammals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, and hamsters among others, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. ALL pets are to be under the care and immediate control of a competent person. A pet is NOT in the care and immediate control of a person unless that person maintains the animal indoors, in a fenced yard, a proper cage or enclosure in their yard, with electronic fence or collar, or on a hand held leash not more than sixteen (16) feet long. Pets are NOT allowed on the south beach. The south beach is defined as the area from the boardwalk at the South Dunes Picnic area south and around the southern tip of the island and north to a point 2,000 feet south of the St. Andrews Picnic area. This shall NOT apply to any animal operating as a guide dog or performing similar assistance for a disabled person. Pets on ALL other beach areas, trails, sidewalks, bike paths or areas other than the premises of the pet's owner must be on a hand held leash not more than sixteen (16) feet long. Pet owners are to immediately remove and dispose of the fecal material of their pet. The owner of a dog, cat or ferret must possess proof of a current rabies vaccination for each animal owned as provided for by the laws of Georgia. For more information, contact Deputy Chief Steve Bolin at the Department of Public Safety. Email sbolin@jekyllisland.com or call (912) 635-4035. The reunion is a pilgrimage to honor the memory of family founder Ward Lee by visiting the Wanderer Memorial that was established on the South End of Jekyll Island at the St. Andrew's picnic area in 2008 in honor of the 409 survivors of the slave ship Wanderer. The enslaved Africans who were illegally transported aboard the vessel were the last known group of Africans to be sold into slavery in the United States. Cilucngy , Ward Lee, was only 12 or 13 years old when he was kidnapped from his home and transported to America aboard the Wanderer. Today his family is spread across South Carolina, Florida, and New York. They include lawyers, teachers, travel agents, and more. Sharon Sansaverino and Sheryl Valenti, Lee's great-great grand-children achieved fame as the country's first African American Doublemint billboard twins. With not all of the family able to attend the Memorial opening the idea of a family reunion was born. Initial plans for the reunion include a family picnic at the memorial site and various recreational activities around the island to suit all ages.
