BeachScape GEORGIA SEA TURTLE CENTER BE A RESEARCHER FOR A NIGHT Sea turtle season in Glynn County officially arrived when a nesting mother crawled up on Jekyll Island on Sunday night. This nest was the second in the state, behind Cumberland Island which experienced the state's first nest on May 9. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is offering the public a unique summer opportunity to help guests gain a first-hand understanding of the mysterious world of Jekyll Island's endangered sea turtles. A program now in its third year, Ride with Night Patrol will allow guests to experience the beach from an entirely fresh perspective. Participants will meet biologists at 8:45 pm at the Great Dunes Pavilion. From there, they accompany them to the beach on all-terrain vehicles. They then provide field assistance in order to gain hands-on experience in spotting sea turtle crawls, taking measurements of sea turtles and their habitat, and marking the egg chamber appropriately. Throughout the night patrol, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center's staff is available to answer any questions guests may have. "This is a wholly unique experience most people would never have the opportunity to do," said Sea Turtle Center Research Coordinator Dr. Kimberly Andrews. When asked about the Ride with Night Patrol experience, one 2013 participant described it as "the best night of my life." Furthermore, another participant from last summer said that her family's time on the beach with the GSTC patrol team "sparked a deeper interest in our children for not only sea turtles but all animals and how we can better care for wildlife." Night patrols with Sea Turtle Center staff will be offered nightly May 23 - July 31, 2014 with the exception of July 4th. A minimum of 24 hours advance notice is required and staff can only accommodate a maximum of four guests per patrol. Each night patrol session can last for up to 11 hours (participants have the option of staying on the beach all night or returning at any point) and costs $100 per person, with a 10% discount available for GSTC members and Sea Turtle Camp Kids. Programs are subject to weather and physical requirements. For additional information Ride with Night Patrol, visit gstc.jekyllisland.com or call 912-635-4137. This summer, the Jekyll Island Museum is offering a new opportunity to engage the past, with regularly scheduled guided tours of the Horton House Historic Site. Tours of the site highlight the important role played by site inhabitants in the development of Georgia. The Horton House Historic Site is named for William Horton. Horton was the first Englishman to obtain property on Jekyll Island, acquiring a 500acre land grant in 1735. Horton was an important figure in the Royal Colony of Georgia, serving as a military commander at Fort Frederica on nearby St. Simons Island. His home was destroyed by the Spanish following the Battle of Bloody Marsh, but Horton rebuilt, turning the island into a relatively prosperous plantation. His sturdy tabby house still stands today, one of the earliest remaining tabby structures in Georgia. Other historic occupants of the site included Native Americans, indentured servants, British troops, French privateers, African Americans, and Civil War soldiers. Jekyll Island became embroiled in many major incidents in American history through the experiences of the diverse collection of men and women who called Jekyll Island home. Their lives were dramatically impacted by stirring events that changed the course of our history, from Colonization, to the American Revolution, to the War of 1812, to the Civil War, and beyond. Through their stories, discover the vital role Jekyll Island played in the early years of Georgia. Horton House tours depart from the Jekyll Island Museum on Stable Road on Saturdays, June 7-July 26, 2014, at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Adults $16, Children 7-15 $7, Children 6 and under free. Reservations are required. Reserve online at jekyllisland.com or call 912-635-4036. A key feature of the Center is the new entrance gates which feature three pay-in-the-lanes machines. The new machines are able to process electronic payments and collect cash in an efficient 3-step process. With the same technology in each lane, guests can access the island through any of the three lanes avoiding traffic back-ups common with the former entrance gates which had only one pay lane and one scanner lane. The additional lane and the eventual elimination of the dedicated lane was part of the new, electronic design for the Guest Information Plaza which was paid for with public bond proceeds. The design with three lanes of access, allows drivers to make decisions regarding lane preference based on the number of cars waiting in line while allowing all three lanes to be utilized without restrictions for all guests to Jekyll Island. Annual pass holders receive a significant cost savings over the day pass rate and have the convenience of moving through either of the lanes without making cash or credit card payments. Even though three lanes are routinely open, only 4% of daily paying traffic uses the third lane which was dedicated to decals during our transition from the old system to the new. More than 1.2 million vehicles pass through the new gate system each year. The overall average time for all vehicles coming through the gates is just 46.5 seconds. This is a combination of both annual passes (average 3 seconds) and paying in all lanes (average 90 seconds). Recent average lane usage rates are as follows: Lane 1 54%, Lane 2 - 42%, Lane 3 - 4%. As an added convenience, guests and annual pass holders can purchase parking passes and renew annual passes online via jekyllisland.com. Online purchasers receive an electronic pass with a bar code which can be read directly from a smartphone or tablet. The new entrance is a calming welcome to guests. From the point past the gates, guests can enjoy the beautiful vistas of the marshland as they travel the short two miles on Jekyll Island, the Nearest Faraway Place. These amazing creatures are a great indicator of the island's overall ecological health, as they are sensitive to environmental factors. A healthy population of alligators translates to a healthy island ecosystem. Additionally, alligators are a top predator on Jekyll Island, and they help maintain healthy populations of other animals. Most commonly, alligators will be found near lakes, especially around golf courses, but are not considered extreme threats to people. By following a simple set of guidelines, these impressive creatures can add a bit of extra wonder, but no harm, to your overall Jekyll Island experience. Just remember: Be kind. Stay back. Follow the rules. While exploring and enjoying Jekyll Island, follow these rules to maintain a safe but educational experience around alligators: Do not feed or attempt to feed the alligators: Alligators are protected by state and federal law and feeding them is illegal. When alligators are fed they lose their natural fear of humans. Be aware of your surroundings: Always be aware of alligators when you are anywhere near fresh or brackish water. Never intentionally approach or try to capture an alligator, no matter what size. Do not allow children to play in water inhabited by alligators: Always keep children a safe distance from the water's edge, and never allow them to throw objects into the water. To an alligator, a splash potentially means a food source is in the water. Do not allow pets in or near water known to harbor alligators: Dogs and other small pets are more likely to be attacked than humans because they resemble natural prey. Please keep all dogs leashed and do not allow them to swim, drink, or play at the water's edge. Play it safe when golfing: Never search for a lost golf ball in the water or on the bank. Of course, never try to hit a ball that has come to rest near an alligator. Though Jekyll Island is home to a sizeable population of alligators, the animals rarely cause problems for island residents and guests. On occasion, an alligator will be seen in the road, or may enter a private backyard. Celebrate with a Purpose! The proposed changes are available for review and comment. The Design Guidelines, developed for the Jekyll Island Authority by Cooper Carry The Center for Connective Architecture, were adopted in October 2008. The guidelines dictate the architectural design, height, scale and density of all new construction on the island. The proposed changes include updating the new overall fixed-acreage development limitations contained in the new Jekyll Island Master Plan and recently signed into law by Governor Nathan Deal. Changes to the project review process, design submittal requirements, list of preferred and native plant materials are also included. The proposed changes also include an overall reduction in the allowable height of new buildings to a maximum of 45 feet. The DRAFT revisions along with the original Jekyll Island Design Guidelines are available for public review online at jekyllisland.com/jekyll-island-authority/. Hard copy can be reviewed at the Jekyll Island Authority Administrative Office at 100 James Road, Jekyll Island, Ga. Comments may be submitted to the Jekyll Island Authority, attention Chris O'Donnell via mail at 100 James Road, Jekyll Island, Georgia 31527 or via e-mail to codonnell@jekyllisland. This summer, Jekyll Island will be home to a series of two-day camps for kids, centered on eco-education and outdoor fun. Join Capt. Brooks Good and his crew from Coastal Outdoor Adventure for SharkFest Adventure Camps off the shores of Jekyll! During these hands-on camps, children ages 6 to 14 will be led through two mornings of sharkbased fun and learning, with opportunities for tykes to try their hands at shark fishing. While on the open waters surrounding Jekyll Island, area fishing guides will help kids reel in a variety of catches, in- cluding Bonnethead, Blacktip, Sandbar and Spinner sharks. Besides bringing home a big catch, students will also brush up on their knowledge about bait options, catch procedures and reel techniques, for sharks as well as other local fish. "You should see the looks on these children's faces as they reel in that first fish," Good said. "Not only do these camps give kids a feeling of pride in themselves for tackling this new skill, it also opens their eyes to new ways of thinking about our coastal ecosystem. This hands-on activity instills in them a new respect for the world and waterways around them." Camps run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and cost $175 per child with a $25 discount per additional sibling. June camps will be offered June 5-6, June 12-13, June 19-20, June 26-27, July 1-2, July 10-11, July 17-18, July 24-25, July 31-Aug 1.The camps depart from the Jekyll Wharf Marina in the Historic District. Please note, each two-day camp is limited to the first 12 children who register. Please visit coastaloutdooradventurecamps. BeachScape EXPLORATION A Grateful Life Summertime By Lauren Garvey agratefullife.weebly.com It's here! That time of year we all look forward to. Planning our vacations, parties, barbecues and get togethers, making wonderful, life-long memories. Summertime, the very best time of the year. Many of us connect those memories with childhood beach trips and long lazy days in the sun. The sounds, smells and people in those past events are what make them so precious. Smells and sounds that trigger our mind to go right back to the moment it actually happened, bringing a smile, sadness or even a longing to be there again. Think about some of your favorites times with family and friends. I bet a lot of them were at the beach. Taking my walks on our beautiful coastline, smelling the ocean, hearing the waves, feeling the sand and wind on my skin is the most comforting feeling I know. It feels like home. My life revolves around the sea and I don't think I could ever live far from it. It is my therapy, my best friend and one of the great loves in my life. I think when God created the oceans, with it's strength, beauty and wonder, He wanted each of us to cherish it and gain comfort just by being near it. FACEBOOK PHOTOS Guests and residents on Jekyll Island share one very common thread: they all love taking snapshots of our beautiful island! Daily, Jekyll Island Facebook fans share with us images they have captured while exploring the island. From breathtaking sunsets and our moss-draped oak canopies, to couples starting new lives together with a wedding on Driftwood Beach, our photos galleries are filled with blissful images from our friends. My wish for you, if you are reading this and close to the ocean, is very simple. I wish you comfort, peace and your own beautiful life-long memories. Jekyll Island Authority
