Island treasures Island TreasureS ashore Annual game of hide and seek a favorite for many Beginning New Year's Day and continuing through the months of January and February, the Jekyll Island Authority hosts "Island Treasures on Jekyll Island," a unique, treasure-hunting experience on Jekyll Island. The treasures are handcrafted glass floats called Island Treasures. The glass floats have been sought after by Jekyll Island guests since 2002. Each is a unique design and is stamped with the year of the hunt on its base. Island Treasures will be hidden all over Jekyll Island, not just on the beach, increasing the opportunities to find these beautiful pieces of art. Island Treasures mimic glass floats once used on the nets of fishermen in the early 1900's. The floats would sometimes break loose and wash ashore for lucky beachcombers to find and keep. Collecting these glass floats became a hobby in the 1950's when the commercial fishing industry began using plastic and Styrofoam floats, making glass fishing floats rare, highly sought-after and valuable Island Treasures. During these first two winter months, the Jekyll Island Authority recreates this treasure hunting experience for their visitors. Volunteers hide the Island Treasure for lucky guests to find. The glass floats are the work of commissioned artists from across the country. This eclectic group of talented artists uses the same techniques that have been used for 2000 years to create glass art pieces. The lucky treasure hunters can register their Island Treasure at the Jekyll Island Guest Information Center to receive a biography of the artist and a certificate of authenticity. {Nightly, Weekly & Monthly Rates Available} 2, 4, 6 Passenger Cars Two Jekyll Island Locations w w w. Cornelius Lee, Secretary of the United States Golf Assiciation (USGA), was a member of the Jekyll Island Club. In 1924, under his influence, low-to-high handicap golfers conducted a series of equipment tests on Jekyll Island. These tests resulted in the adoption of a lighter ball and steelshafted clubs for use by the USGA. Thirty-five amateur golfers of various handicaps carried out the tests, as regular play, over the island's new 18hole golf course. Thirty-six holes were played each day, for ten days, using a different ball each day. Various sizes, weights and makes of golf balls were tested for length of flight, roll, and "general serviceability." The results would determine "the standardized golf ball of the future." A heavier, more powerful, long-flying ball was considered a "menace" that had made many of the finest courses obsolete. Tests on Jekyll Island indicated that a larger, lighter ball with less traveling power was easier to hit. It offered greater control and would increase enjoyment of shorter courses. As a result of testing, the larger, lighter balls were introduced in 1931, but were very unpopular. After a year, the USGA reverted back to a heavier ball, but maintained the larger size. illegal to use in 1914. They were initially viewed as an unacceptable departure from the "traditional and customary form and make" of golf clubs. Following the tests on Jekyll Island, however, the USGA finally relented and permitted the use of steel-shafted clubs beginning in April of 1924. They quickly gained popularity and remain in widespread use today. The tests conducted on Jekyll Island by the USGA in 1924 illustrated dramatic changes to the game of golf in America. Tests also revealed that steel-shafted clubs allowed players to hit harder, farther, and with greater accuracy. They were also more durable than hickory shafts. The USGA had declared them The investigation of new technologies on the island signified a switch to more modern golf equipment. Kate Kirby and Nancy Lyle from Hartwell, GA will be displaying their photography. These two ladies travel the world experimenting with their cameras while swapping composition and editing tips. Some of their favorite sites for photography are the Oregon coastline, New Mexico, New York City, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and Georgia. These two ladies find great pleasure in "pursuing the wonder of moments" in their pictures and all who view this show will not be disappointed. The third member of this talented trio is potter Lucy Clark from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Lucy "found her artistic voice" when she created her first hand built piece of pottery. Unlike everyday life, the clay allows her to let go of control and create beauty. Lucy's experience as a massage therapist has taught her that "human muscles respond not to control and force, but to the intuitive work of my hands to find what the body needs me to find". This experience allows her to feel the clay and hear the voice of the art within waiting to be released. This show runs from January 2 through January 31. A reception for the artists will be held on Sunday, January 5 from 1 to 3 pm. Goodyear cottage is open to the public Monday - Friday from 12 - 4 and Saturday - Sunday from 10 - 4. New Menu!
